If someone could explain the appeal of all this micro / macro silliness, I'd appreciate it ....

Well to put it simply. Its a fetish, just like any other in the world. In the same way someone lusts over heavy bondage, others do so over minute or massive size differences.
Though like ranard, its commonly a more extreme extention of sub/dom activities. The macro having near absolute power over whatever it preys on, and the micro having absolutely no power whatsoever.
Personally its just fun to imagine since its one of those things that pretty much exists solely in the imagination.

Macro tends to stem from those that wished to be the monster or loved the size of the monsters in the old Godzilla movies, as well as similar movies. Micro tends to be the other way around. Heck one of my roomies is a micro-dragon. To me the whole thing doesn't tend to make much sense, as when i look at most of the art with that subject, it's just some excuse to say 'I'm bigger then you' or 'My *blank* is larger then yours now.'
Mmmh .. How long would you say it took to get ideas down and into 3D?
I play with 3D Studio and Maya, but I've contemplated how long it may take to convert a couple profile sketches into an actual model. :)
Lovely job anyway, you should have uploaded an "alternate" view so we could see the cute Krystal with jeans. :)

It depends upon how fast you can model and how much detail you want to put into it.
On the plus side, once you've created something in 3D, you can use it over and over again.
I still have the scene file for this image, so I *could* render it from a different angle, if you really want a better view of Krystal #3. I might do so, and put it in scraps.
