Full comic will be available from my dealer's table at AC, and after that from www.rabbitvalley.com
Speaking of the art, it is all watercolors! I find them to be the perfect balance of speed, quality, and expressiveness. Though I used ink pens for the panel borders and speech balloons, the paintings themselves are not inked: this saves me a good hour per page, which is a lifesaver as it takes about 2 hours just to paint a page.
It's funny, though, because I've had people be amazed that these are basically watercolor paintings—one guy thought it would be easier to have an inked picture with a watercolor wash. The thing is, for an inked picture to look good with a watercolor wash, the inking as to be practically as good as if it were just inked. So my thinking is; if I'm going to ink a picture, that's all it's going to have. If I'm going to color a picture, I'm going to give it some rip-roaring colors and not bother with the inking.
Needless to say these are two different visual languages, and you have to change your composition accordingly. Black and white inking relies heavily on shapes and angles and shading to invoke a mood, while in color you have to go with contrasting hues and overall color palettes. I wouldn't say one is better than the other, they are just different.
Anyway, I ramble, and there's still 17 more pages to go!
Enjoy!
