Murkey !
One of Sjir's tasks is to trade for various things on Kethrix's behalf. While Kethrix can hunt for most of his food, spices, fruits and vegetables are harder to happen upon in the wilds.
It was on one of these shopping trips that Sjir discovered a new use for gourds: if carved correctly and lit from within, they could scare off evil spirits--at least according to the locals. With groceries in tow and a Continual Flame spell negotiated for, Sjir headed back for Kethrix's cave with a truly fiendish jack-o-lantern.
Kethrix sensed Sjir's return and went to greet the kobold, but something wasn't right. Sitting at the entrance of the cave was a pumpkin with a face clearly mocking him and magic emanating from within. Evil magic, surely. He knew it must be a scrying senser placed by an evil wizard. In an instant he had thrown himself between the kobold and the dark magical object, snapping it up.
"Yoh wohn shpy ahn uth!" he attempted to shout menacingly around the jack-o-lantern as he bit down.
Sjir had an excellent view of the whole thing. Kethrix never failed to impress when he was ready to fight. As the last of the pieces of the pumpkin were swallowed and Kethrix determined that no evil wizard's thralls were coming to attack them, Sjir explained the yearly ritual of pumpkin carving that the villagers performed. As the words finally got through to Kethrix, the dragon looked down awkwardly at his belly, where the internal Continual Flame spell was making even more of his veins and nervous system visible than usual.
"Oh." he licked his lips, "...good crop this year. Very juicy."
Just a funny little piece for autumn. Will move to scraps in September so that I can use it as my ID picture for the season.
