Recorded August 17th-20th 2024
All instruments real and preformed by myself.
Lyrics and chords
Capo at 3rd fret, key of Bb
G, C, X6 D, C, G X3
In and old chair, I sit here waiting for you
The same affair, but with a different view
And the ladies their dancing without their bouquets
The gentleman bow to them marrily
And the old clock on the wall keeps ticking the hours away
This old heart knows neither pleasure nor pain
I'm cold as ice and numb as novocaine
It's been many years I've been waiting for you
You're giving me answers I already knew
And the old clock on the wall keeps ticking the days away
(Tin whistle solo)
It's the same old story, its been told a thousand times
A man let down no matter how high he climbs
I get up to leave in a shade of grey
A victim of roles in this cruel ballet
And the old clock on the wall keeps ticking the years away
Instrumentation and recording
In order of appearance
60s Nylon string Aria X/Y Miced
Electric Sammick fretless bass plugged straight into interface
Rainsong Carbon fiber acoustic X/Y Miced
Vocals manually double tracked miced with large diaphragm Rode NT1A
Tweaked Generation brass tin whistle miced with large diaphragm Rode NT1A
1970s Peerless banjo X/Y Miced
I had originally wanted to use mandolin here for this recording but I think the banjo works. The Mandolin is currently in my shop getting some work done. I am replacing some of the hardware and fixing a couple of cracks.

I was working at a resort doing janitorial work in Grand Teton National Park one summer. My coworkers all got together and sat by a campfire one night. Someone brought out their guitar and it felt like he just turned on the radio and played new songs we never heard. I was shocked in awe with the quality.
Had the same feeling with this song. I was going to give it a listen while I prepared for bed but instead I stood in place and just listened. It's a wonderful song that brings me calm. I'm grateful you put in the time and effort to make this piece of art.

You really think so? I have gotten that feedback from a lot of people. I guess in my head I just thought mandolin might be more "period" but then again, so is banjo in terms of the 1800s where a scene like that could have also taken place. Because of how new the 5 string modern banjo is I sometimes forget they have been around a long long time as well.
how much emphasis do you put on historical instrument accuracy? tbh, as someone without a music background, i was only considering the informal qualities of the sound, and not much about the historical context.
ok now picture me having a white russian while saying that comment aloud, followed by "...and that's just my opinion, man."

oh my lord, all I can do is a crunch the most beautiful, gnarly-est music face of my life. By far one of the most delightful tunes I’ve ever heard in my life.
It’s specifically the banjo jingle that I love so much, it reminds me so much of the banjo from “A Long Walk along Point Reyes National Seashore” in the middle of the song. And well, Point Reyes is byfar one of my most favorites, so your’s definitely takes the cake aswell
muah, it’s so beautiful!

The funny thing is I wasn;t actually thinking of double tracking in the beginning. I just sometimes like to record duplicate tracks and see which ones I will want to go with but these came out so close that I thought they sounded good like this. Sort of an Elliot Smith vibe. So I ran with it.
I just sat down and listened to that song too. Its really pretty. Thank you for introducing me to Staffan's music.
Thank you so much for listening and the feedback <3
