A peek into what Garnet's life before she was resurrected by The Star.
Fealty to Lumiere is path for only the most loyal. The day of one's knighting at the hands of Queen Needil is the day they learn this truth. Their body, their will is no longer theirs.
If they accept, they are transformed into an armor plated monster and blessed with power.
If they refuse, they are forever barred from knighthood and can never step foot in the castle again.
Their lives of isolation are not without perks, however. They are occasionally allowed beyond the castle to mingle with citizens, where they are revered and showered with gifts such as high-quality food and beer. Some have even gone on to achieve a sort of celebrity status (such as Daya Garland's imposter).
The structure of the knights has been shaken up recently. Lumiere's war with Ecleis has come to an end, but knights can still regularly be found occupying towns, awaiting new orders that have yet to arrive. Some try to exude authority over the towns they're in, some ride their fame and adopt a hedonistic life, some just wander aimlessly with no purpose.
Garnet was an unusual case; a war orphan raised in the knights' compound who begged to begin training early. Training does not begin until young adulthood, but her persistence and clear devotion to Lumiere convinced the Queen to allow her begin training as a child.
When she fell in battle, she graciously accepted death, knowing that she served her purpose, even if she failed in the end. Having been given a second chance at life by The Star, she is constantly torn between chasing her former status and adapting to her new life of freedom.

Lore Updates 9/19/24:
-While Garnet was on the path to true knighthood, she and her comrades were still in the final stages of training when they were tasked with hunting down the traitorous mage, Tourma Veiss. As she was killed and had her body stolen in that battle, she is unaware of the true nature of the Lumerian Knights. Had she survived and captured Tourma, she would have been given the choice to ascend to knighthood, a choice new recruits are not informed of until they are making the decision. Should a knight accept and swear fealty to Queen Needil, they are fused with their armor and transformed into one of her monsters. Should they refuse, they are barred from the castle and forever banned from Knighthood, sworn to secrecy of the ritual under threat of death.
