When I was in college I had a gaggle of ratties. not as cuddleable as my puppehs, but in their own way were awesome pets.
i recall the first time i brought one home, mom was freaking out about it and said it needed to go. Within a few months, she was playing with it, and in another few months, would let it loose to wonder the house during the day and cried with me when he died about 2.5 years later.
