Chapter 1: Where It Started, Where It Led
Sally and Ceres are first-time mothers, with Sally carrying their baby, and just because that baby is breech doesn’t mean Sally’s changing her mind about wanting a homebirth. If anything, she’s only going to try harder! The moms, with their new friend and midwife Sara, set out to have the birth they want at their farmhouse and start their new journey not just as wives, but now as mothers too.

In this chapter: On the morning of the big day, the Whitehorns take some time to think about their lives from their points of view. Fluff, kissing, and cuddling ensue.

Evertide’s Notes
When I first thought up the notes for these characters and this story, I was already doing something I don’t think I’d done before: Commission a story. Or at least, I’d done it so rarely or so long ago that I can’t remember it. As a personal rule, I didn’t commission stories. Not from having anything against it; quite the opposite, I believe in supporting your favorite artists both monetarily and emotionally. I just didn’t commission stories because I felt like it was me, in some way, admitting my inferiority that however good my writing may be, I can only write for myself first and others second, while I was kind of jealous that they were creative enough to produce work for someone else on demand (and with the proper motivation).

But then I found Gimmeabigpush’s Tumblr and it didn’t take me long to see that I really, really wanted to be a part of this somehow. At the time, Gimmeabigpush (or BP) hadn’t written any furry stories yet, and I was determined to offer an idea that wouldn’t just be the first for its own sake but would be a good story in its own right. So, I broke my personal rule and presented my notes and my offer.

Not only was I very happy with her work, but I never could also have expected how far it’s gone from there. Not just from how much work we’ve produced, but from the good partnership we’ve built.

Since then, Sally and Ceres (and, depending on when a story was set, their child) have become comfort characters for me, characters I can think about or write about to feel good. Characters I can go to when I need a break from drama, or at least the drama is in smaller doses. Just two characters who can be happy and in love and a family, with the ups and downs that implies.

After BP wrote her part of this story, I later added some stuff, and then I was so inspired that I wrote a few extra scenes. Understandably, BP put up the part she’d mostly written on her sites. I’ve also done some retconning on what I wrote all that time ago to keep up with the made-up-as-we-go lore we’ve built for the characters over time. Now, some two and a half years later, it’s time for the full story to be shared.
