Another work in progress that has stymied me for a few years - this one is all about lighting effects....It's a blue-grey rainy day - she has this maroon umbrella, she's wearing a yellow raincoat, the folds of which do a bounced-light thingy to create sort of orange coloured folds...from the puddles from below we get some sky-coloured lights...
i set myself a lighting puzzle of nutzy complexity...Eventually i went i bought a slick yellow rain coat from a thrift store to photograph it in real bluish rain...but couldn't figure out how to get umbrella fx....so gotta get or make a maroon umbrella...
i could fake it all, but where i want to go with my painting is a sense of the complexities of light and shadow....this is one of many gates i'll have to pass through to get there...

What a surprising question! :)
i had head of back in the day - but never heard - Barclay James Harvest. Just went over to youtube...hmmm... might be interesting... they never got much if any radio play in the states....maybe a king bisquit flour hour show?...
and i didn't think of Rain Tree Crow when doing this, but, yeah, David Sylvian is my favorite song writer!...my Emma and Ash novel has some scenes that came out of the moods of some of his songs...
This came out of memories of going to kindergarten and first grade in San Gabriel California, on rainy mornings, wearing those yellow rain-coats, waiting at the stop for the school bus... Not really anything at all to any Sylvian song i can think of...
So - the Sylvian thing - was there something here that suggested that? Or just coincidence?

I saw you had a folder named "Gone To Earth" open along with Windows media player, and had assumed it was the title of an album.
"Gone To Earth" (of which BJH also has a seminal album named) is my favourite David Sylvian album, it came out in 1986 and also stars Robert Fripp on a handful of tracks. I know of Sylvian from working on a project and tour with Robert Fripp in the early 90's, of which a band I actually worked with in the early 00's (The California Guitar Trio) not only opened for, but were tutored themselves by Robert when they were part of the League Of Craft Guitarists with him.
So yeah, I guess you could say I'm a bit of a music head. ;)

Ah, that explains it. i've posted some WIPs with folder tags of the music i was listening to as a heads-up to folks, forgot about that!
Sylvian is favorite songwriter. Fripp favorite guitarist, from way back...Court, Giles, Giles &F, etc... i'm an amateur classically trained guitar/composer...i appreciate the skill and sensitivity they bring to their work, and in both cases the raw personal exposure they open their art to...
Fan of Calif trio as well, though known mainly via League and RF Sting Quintet CD...tight budget at the time...
To research BJH via youtube - a couple best songs suggestions?

Taking Some Time On - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-JFOg1lyT0
Dark Now My Sky - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdgtfNVOT4c
Both from the eponymous first album.
She Said - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aowmiSTm4LM
from 'Once Again'.
Poor Man's Moody Blues - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dc4enBNtNCQ
From 'Gone To Earth'.
I would have to say, given where you are coming from musically in taste, their first two albums (Barclay James Harvest and Once Again) would be your best bet for enjoyment.
