So recently
GoatTrain opened a series of 'song inspired' commissions, and I'd actually had an idea in my head for a while along those lines...
The song in question is Shades of Grey by Billy Joel, and it's very much a song about no longer seeing the world in black and white terms, and realizing how complicated the world actually is. And I've long thought about this with regards to Skunkworks as a superhero; she's long been a bit on the cynical side, having done some less-than-heroic things in her youth, but she eventually came to the conclusion that it wouldn't work in the long run. Or as she puts it, "I came up with half a dozen different ways to take over the world when I was in high school; then I realized that if I actually succeeded I'd have to run the place and deal with everybody else who wanted to stab me in the back and take over themselves. No thanks."
That doesn't, of course, mean that everybody else has come to the same conclusion...
Now with the wisdom of years, I try to reason things out;
And the only people I fear are those who never have doubts.
Save us all from arrogant men, and all the causes they're for;
I won't be righteous again... I'm not that sure anymore.
Shades of Grey are all that I find, when I look to the enemy lines.
There ain't no rainbows shining on me; Shades of Grey are the colours I see!

And here we slip sideways into "Everybody Wants To Rule The World"...
Love the piece, very gray and carrying the energy of "I keep doing this and nothing's changing". Bearing in mind though, while it may not be getting better... it may also not be getting worse.

There's another much earlier Shades of Gray song I also have on CD here that was recorded by The Monkees. It's rather more wistful and nostalgic about the simplicity of life when they were younger, while the Billy Joel one is a little more "it sucks, but that's life, and it's still better to face reality than deny it." Which is very much a theme especially with the later Billy Joel.
(Actually, according to the Wikipedia disambiguation page, there are at least a dozen songs called Shades of Grey/Gray.)

Though I get a lot of flack for it, I have a particular fondness for Dave Matthews Band's "Grey Street":
Oh, there's an emptiness inside her
and she'd do anything to fill it in
and though it's red blood bleeding from her now
it's more like cold blue ice in her heart
she feels like kicking out all the windows
and setting fire to this life
she could change everything about her
using colors bold and bright
but all the colors mix together
to grey!
and it breaks her heart...
