Taking a break from smexy mice ladies. About a year ago I posted the first http://www.furaffinity.net/view/3732568/ of a series of concept designs for the pre-production stage of an animated television series worked on in the late 90's. Well recently I found a few more copies of the sketches I had made.
This was a proposed design for what is really not a bomber but instead was stand-off platform system. This was a universe where energy shields exist but were not the almost invincible things of some sci-fi creations. Hit them hard enough and the hard crunchy shell fails exposing the soft chewy center.
If I remember correctly, in this proposed series there were only a few ways to break shields and damage ships and their crews. One was directed energy weapons but against larger vessels it took some mighty powerful weapons to breach the shields. Kinetic energy from crashing something hard, dense and going really fast, but once again larger vessels shields could resist these, and nukes. Lots of nukes.
When space combat did not involve direct combat between large capital ships, something both sides tried to avoid, attacks were carried out by large numbers smaller manned ships launched from the larger vessels. It is cliche but it the feel was that of the Carrier Wars in the Pacific during WWII. Swarms of fighters escorting bombers and attack craft in to attack the enemies main ships while the opposition attempts to thwart assaults with their own fighter screens and point defenses. At the same time send out their own strike packages to attack your main ships
The Vulcan's main job was to race ahead of the strike package and fire their large missiles at the enemy fleet. Then break off and tear back to the protection of the fighter screens. The missiles carried either large thermonuclear warheads to disrupt capital ships shields and destroy smaller ships. Swarms of guided submunitions to sow havoc amongst enemy fighter defense. Or launch decoys and jamming ordnance to confuse the enemies sensors.
Is this how I imagine space combat really happening? No. But if one suspends their disbelief for a moment it does allow for some fine space opera.

humm, reading this I think youd have liked one of FASA's old games: Renegade Legions. Broke down into three parts. Centurion (ground), Interceptor (fighters/gunships) and Leviathan (cap ships and fleet actions). All of them could combine and they did release a 4th game Praetor that was mostly a strategic game but had rules for letting the battles be done in the other games. I never had much chance to play them but loved the artwork and background flavor text so much I collected the whole thing.
I like the overall appearance and the large missile under the spacecraft reminds me of a SU-33 carrying a Kh-41 on the centerline (the Kn-41 "Moskito" is an air-launched version of the SS-22, a high-speed, ramjet-powered, anti-ship missile - I suspect the ARM version is/was intended as an Aegis-killer). The situation vis-a-vis shields here reminds me of the attackers' shields in Ringo's "Live Free or Die", the first of his "Troy Rising" trilogy.
You know, I don't know if you'd appreciate the comparison or not, but I got *huge* nostalgia pains looking at this ship. It's nearly a dead ringer for the Hercules heavy fighter from Freespace.
Specifically, the doomed 'Hero' ship from this wonderful little opening... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khIWdolT9xY
