"I really don't like being down here, boss," Aaron said.
"Come now, keep on moving. We've still got a job to do. And besides..." His commander turned to him in his mech suit and shrugged. "Nothing down here that will harm us anyway."
Aaron gulped and continued in his own suit, following his commander along the bottom of the ocean trench. They were quite deep down—not deep enough to escape the sunlight, but still enough for him to require his suit's lights to see anything properly. It was eerily quiet down here. And eerily lonely. They were quite far from their main vessel by now and there were hardly any signs of larger life this deep down. Aaron kept scanning around him, almost as if expecting some sort of sea monster to show up and attack. He knew better than to believe such things existed, at least before he hopped in. But now that he was down here...he couldn't help but wonder.
But after several minutes of agonizingly long walking in these suits, his commander stopped and gazed down at the navigator on his screen.
"It should be around here somewhere..."
There was a low, metallic rumbling in the ground. Aaron paused and looked everywhere around him, but saw no sign of any creature or any debris threatening to fall on them. He looked over to his commander, but he seemed too busy reading out coordinates to pay the sound any mind.
Soon the commander looked up again and kept walking, turning and looking everywhere he could.
"Should be getting closer..."
There was the rumbling again, much closer this time. Aaron scanned everywhere around him, trying to find the source of it. It almost sounded like some giant metal wreckage were moving and shifting along the ground. The two of them were down here to find the wreckage of a recently lost ship, after all, so such noises wouldn't be too unusual.
Or it could be something far bigger trying to sneak up on them.
But before he could ponder it for long, the two came across the first signs of the wreckage. Scraps of metal littered the trench floor, and as they looked on ahead, the scraps led to a much larger structure lying at the bottom. A piece of the ship that had broken off.
"Bingo," his commander said.
Aaron nodded and followed after him. But before he could make it very far, he heard a loud whoosh! in the distance like a giant wingbeat in the water. And then what sounded like several loud, metallic clicking sounds.
He jerked and looked everywhere around him. Something was definitely there with them.
"Uhh, boss?" Aaron said. "I think there is something here..."
"Yep, I hear it," he replied. "Big guy is around, it seems. We'll see if he shows up at all."
Just as he said it, Aaron looked up and nearly screamed. Lounging on the cliffside above them was a massive sea dragon, black as the darkness of the abyss. It was easily bigger than any other creature he'd encountered up close.
And it was staring directly at them with eyes giving off an eerie white glow.
"Um...b-b-boss?" Aaron said, his voice shaking. "You, uh...s-said nothing here will...h-hurt us, right?"
"Huh?" His boss looked over, only to see the massive black dragon. But instead of getting scared, he just smiled and chuckled. "Ah, there he is!"
Aaron blinked. "...wait...he?!"
"Yeah! We call him Phasma. Don't worry about him too much, he won't hurt us."
Aaron wanted to believe him, but he couldn't for the life of him take his eyes off the black dragon. "You have, um...encountered him before?"
"Oh yeah, plenty of times. Spooked us at first, too. But really he'll just sit there and watch us for a bit before swimming off. I think he's just curious about what we're doing. Now, come here and help me, will you?"
"Uhh...s-sure..."
He tore his eyes off the dragon and came to help his boss with moving debris. He trusted his boss's judgement, yet he couldn't help but still glance back at the black drake watching over them, wondering what he could possibly be thinking...
This was an awesome drawing done by
darknessprotection! When commissioning her, I gave her two options: a floofy snow dragoness, or a black abyssal dragon. She chose the abyssal dragon, and now we have another pic of Phasma to enjoy! Don't worry, as creepy as he looks, he's still a gentle giant.
