Worn in open cockpit planes for warmth. Then they ended up as liners for hardshell helmets. Most modern helmets have built in replaceable liners.

100% understand the need for 'Warmth' at the higher altitudes however!

Nice. Once owned a WW2 US bomber crew flak helmet that fit over a soft helmet. Garage sale find, $5. Sold it at a gunshow for $100.
