I built this catchpole/control stick out of a PVC pipe to use as a prop at Califur 2011, as I will be dressed as a Zomcon employee. I used these instructions:

I covered the pipe with duct tape as I didn't want it to be white and wrapped a bit of non-slip shelf lining on the handle. Overall cost was about $15; I didn't see the point in paying for a professionally-made pole when its only to be used as a prop. It is functional but I was unable to get the ferrules on the cable so only used a gob of hotglue on the inside end. So if you see me at the con and want to play around with it that's fine, just realise it may not hold up to rough play.
I got all the materials but the tensioner at Lowe's, Ace had that.

I have a prop Sawed Off Shotgun made from an old rifle cap gun i had lying around, the tube from an old rock band drumset stand that I hacksawed shorter, flat black primer, an old champagne cork, and some electrical tape. Thinking of other props too including a gasmask for my fursuit and maybe something random like a shaun of the dead cricket bat :P
