Jump to present day. Ten years later Lyla groaned as her eyes shot open, the remnants of the memory lingering like dark clouds over her mind. It was a dream she had revisited too many times to count—one that hung heavy like a weight around her heart. Sitting up slowly, Lyla brushed her disheveled hair from her face and attempted to shake off the dream's grasp. She had often replayed the event in her head, agonizing over what she could have done differently. Had she been braver? Should she have intervened sooner? Each time she woke from that dream, she felt as if she were suffocating, trapped in a loop of helplessness.
