"So you fell into the book?"
Cirque scoffs. "What kind of question is that? You saw me falling from the sky."
"Dragons ask questions when they mean to inspire conversation. Maybe if you weren't so busy antagonizing me..."
Hopeless knows how to bait Cirque, and it only takes a faint smirk across his muzzle to inspire her anger. "Shut up," she says.
"Sure."
"I fell into the book," she says with a sigh. "I opened it looking for answers, and I all have is more questions. And whatever this... library place is."
Hopeless leans back. "What was it like to fall into the book?'
"Disorienting. Shocking. Unexpected."
"Terrifying, perhaps."
"No," Cirque said, puffing out her chest, "because I don't get scared."
"Not even when you die."
She shoots him a sour look. "We agreed not to talk about that."
A moment passes, and her wings fold into her sides as she sighs. "Maybe I was a little scared. Wouldn't you be?" she asks, "if you were suddenly dragged out of your world and dropped into... this one?"
Hopeless closes his eyes and recollects his past. "You came alone," he says.
"Of course I came alone," Cirque says with a plume of frostbreath. "Do dragons fall together into this ridiculous place?"
He remembers the embrace of her frail, decaying body, how their scales pressed together tight as they descended into a world he now calls home. He remembers the Trial, the agony, the tears and the blood, so much blood, all of it hers and none of it his... and lets out a long, soft sigh.
"No," he says. "Everybody comes alone."

Getting transported to another world via entering a book reminds me of this novel series I read years ago, and really wish I remembered the name of. Basically, there was this library, which was full of prison books and portal books. Portal books would take you to another world, while prison books kept some evil creature imprisoned inside them in their own little environment. It was pretty neat, and I really want to reread the series, but I don't remember what it was called. Maybe I'll ask reddit, I'm sure someone there will know.
