As someone who's used VLC and had to put up with its problems for so long, such as it locking up when you pause and scrub time elsewhere and then press play... I personally recommend trying out MPC-HC Instead.
It seems to read every single format, and it doesn't have those problems like vlc does.

There's one problem, MPC-HC is only for Windows. MPV is good alternative to VLC even if you aren't using Windows.
