Which only supports my theory that Brits would have a harder time understand me than I would them. xP For instance: in Texas we don't drive "cars"... we drive "cores". We also don't have "wires" in everything... we have "wars".
And words like "a'ight" and "yownt'too" are in the dictionary here. ;p

We Americans are a diverse lot, with a range of accents and dialects that make a great study in linguistics. Plenty of times we can't understand each other.
Example from a coworker who grew up a military brat. He was living in South Carolina when a relative from Pennsylvania came to visit, and her car broke down. The mechanic was from a rural area of SC, and my coworker ended up having to translate for both of them - though notionally all three spoke American English!
For a sample of my speech, I've done the "Voice Meme".

Personally I don't like most accents, especially when translated to English. I don't find anything "hot" about most of them, especially those from "across the pond". I wouldn't go to the UK for all the Pounds in the world. Would drive me insane. German is the same. Just sounds angry to me. One accent I don't mind however is Russian. I had a mentor who was Russian. She was a sexy lady in her late 30's and I always mockingly said she sounded like a James Bond villian.
Re: changing speech patterns... my brother has to be one of the most triumphant examples. He's a natural mimic, and can absorb accents and speech patterns just by talking to someone for a few minutes. That's caused a faux pas or three when he wasn't paying attention!
On the flip side, I met a Brit who had absorbed a lot of "Southern-isms" after living in South Carolina for several years, although she her accent didn't change much. Still was rather odd to hear someone who spoke in clear Received Pronunciation say "Y'all" (and use it correctly in context!)

OH GOD THE BEES THEY'RE IN MY EYES http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1GadTfGFvU
Oh the joys of working with the general public lol! I have learned that just when you think someone can't be any dumber another one comes and proves you wrong. Every time I get one of those people I tell my self (and sometimes the other people I work with who also had the pleasure of dealing with the same customer) "you can't fix stupid" lol!
Just had one a few hours ago. She came in the door as some people were leaving 10 minutes after we closed and one employee told her nicely that we were closed and were told my the manager that we could not sell anything else. She then got really mad and started screaming at us and slamming her fist on the conter and screaming at my coworkers and threating them that she would be waiting for her when she got off. We then called the cops and although the officer being there did get them to leave the did circle the block after the cop decided he was done and left and we saw them when we went as a group to take out the trash (looking around the whole time for things we could defend ourselves with since we thought they were going to come back with a gun or something) Luckely they did not see us though. Pretty scary and I'm not sure if two people will be comming back to work now and one for sure will be bringing a tazer with her incase it happens again. Working nights with the public is not something I want to do anymore or at least not for a VERY long time.
HURR HURR, AMERICUN IN DER UK WUTT
DIFFERENT ACCENT FRUM WUT U EXPECT BUT DUN ASK CUS THEY RESENT U?
Pretty sure I've had this experience in other areas of Europe with my own VERY strong accent. Personally I just tell them where I'm from.
But I certainly understand where you're coming from, because I get this question about 10-20 times on average per holiday. It most certainly does get tiring.
I've also been approached by girls/guys in the US who went full blathering retard over where I come from and how I sound. I wanted to hide under the table!

OH lawed XD
I think most people here do have some trouble recognizing my accent because it's a bit of a mix. I was born and lived in PR for several years before I moved to Pennsylvania, and I still have a bit of an accent. Most people in America would ask me 'What's the accent' because even though it's not strong, there's still noticable hits of a hispanic accent. There has been a few here where they guessed American, but I think a lot of them are like 'Not sure if Amurikan....' XD
Oh yeah, it gets a bit tirring, not so much because it's offensive or anything, but honestly, saaaame question different people XD It's like getting the 'Do you work here?' question at work even though you have the store uniform and name tag
On your last statement wut do you mean? You pick up a bit of an accent when you go abroad and people go batshit over it? XD; Sorry I'm not 100% clear on the last sentence :C

Oh, sorry. I'll clarify.
I have a strong accent, so if I go to say, France, Denmark, Sweden, for example, I speak english but I have a very heavy accent. When I'm socializing in these places (and in one or two states in the US I've been in), I always get asked about my accent. It's staring you in the face the second I open my mouth. Foreigners reactions to it are a lot like your avatar there. And then eventually when they get used to it they... how can I put it...
Treat me like an object? I get a lot of attention about it and people talking to me where I wouldnt get if I didnt sound like I do, or come from where I am from. Don't get me wrong, I love making friends and meeting new people. But I'm a very catty person and I have to be in the mood to socialize. I'm just like that. Getting approached every time I say something abroad makes me sad.
I think the States I've visited may be largely popularized by the descendants of the country where I come from, so I'm seen as like a novelty or something. I dunno. Like how America is fascinated with the Irish, for example.

OOOH GOD, I remember that! XD!!
LOL I can actually forgive this guy, i actually get a few people that don't recognize the accent, but he's the only one that took it a step further and made that really dumb but obvious statement XD

Very special if you ask me XD
A lot of people when they hear me speak they say the same thing, it sounds 'exotic' even though I think it leans more toward american but I suppose ahving something in there to throw them off the accent, it can make it seem even more foreign X3
The allentown area ;)
Where abouts do you live?
Yeah I went to the Kutztown festival with a friend of mine :) I was helping her in her craft show and I was dressed as amish XD

You'll find that idiots pervade my country as thickly as they do yours. Much to my chagrin.
