Lionel Postwar 2343 Santa Fe F3 unpowered dummy unit closeup
This is a closeup of the unpowered dummy unit from my Lionel Postwar 2343 Santa Fe F3 A-A set of diesel-electric locomotives, and they're my favorite locos to pull trains with, as they look great, sound great, and have plenty of pulling power for my dinky little layout. She's what's known as an "A-unit", meaning she has a full cab for the head end crew, which when the real EMD F3s were riding the rails was made up of the engineer, fireman, (yes, train crews still included fireman at that point for whatever reason) and head-end brakeman. This in in contrast to "B-units", which have no cab, and are semi-permanently coupled to an A-unit or between 2 A-units, with all A and B-units in the consist controlled from the cab of the lead A-unit. She comes coupled to a matching powered A-unit that actually has the motors in it, though this dummy's considerable weight does hurt her pulling power somewhat, as both units have a heavy diecast chassis. This loco was designed to run on O-gauge track, and while she can run on O27 track, she'll scrape the switch machine housing on early versions of the No. 1122 O27 switch, and the paint scrapes on the fuel tank of my example clearly indicate that she did just that over and over again on my grandfather's layout when he was a kid, as she originally belonged to him decades ago. Unfortunately, years of play and decades in a box have taken a toll on the old girl's appearance, as her paint is heavily chipped and scratched, the GM decals are damaged, and the celluloid porthole windows are gone, leaving empty holes in her body shell. Despite all that however, she still runs great, pulls great, and the dual horizontal worm-drive motors still make that lovely growling noise as she hauls a train. I love her to death, and I hope to someday pass her on to my own children or grandchildren.
