Chapter 4: Part 1: The Eternal Charge
The Eternal Charge:
Eternal Charge:
The machine of the empire. The gears that keep on turning. Built around the charge that was given to us. All of us. What is this charge we are often talking about?
It is the constant development and motion of our survival and expansion. For if we’d stop for even a single moment we leave ourselves vulnerable for being taken advantage of. But also for the quite literal term of our enlightenment from what the Pantheon gave us. Eternal Life. For as long as we serve our gods. It’s also a promise and creed to live up to the sacrifice of Dernack.
The Zhjari’s plan:
The Watch of Dernack:
The warriors of the Eternal March decidedly came down to one Eternal. Orischan Horr; Zhjari (Grandmaster) and founder of the grandeur Charge in an attempt to ensure that their peoples second chance could be safeguarded under the defense and virtue of those sought worthy to take on the charge. At first it was a rowdy bunch handpicked by Horr to be overseers for the rebuilding of their once great civilization. They called themselves the Eternal watch. Horr himself together with the ever growing church of Dernack took precedent in the wellbeing of their city. As time went on, Horr spread his tendrils wherever he could to bring order among various stretches of civilization across vast lands. Realizing that the limited members of this watch however.. They thinned out pretty quickly. Something needed to be done and as such he created a campaign in an attempt to gather further followers to his cause. In the beginning the Church even propagated his ideals knowing well the success and efficiency that was brought to their now growing populus. They also saw the need for a strengthened defense if they want to continue their growth as people. So in combination to the speeches of hope, unity and a prosperous safeguard underneath the hand of the Eternals. The church spread rumors and promises of our savior's deeds and how the Blessed father himself has deemed the Eternal watch chosen as their stalwart protectors. Mystifying what it would mean to be a member. The church even proposed a trial should be put up to instigate a sense of power to the thought of attendance. The backbone of what would later be the chain of ascension. As trials turned into ritual combat and later on forwarding a pursuit of strength and camaraderie for their fellow brothers. Drilling in both better experiences. Adding in pact members of various kinds into the ranks of the Watch. No longer were it only filled with those in the craft of war itself. But faithful warriors of Derncak Eternal. This band of watchers became stronger by the day and reached depths no other militia could manage to do and the realization of growth these watchers were undergoing. Other people started to also become part of Dernack slowly converting more and more cities and villages across the planet.
Arbiters in duty:
After some time Horr also realized the name WATCHER didn't fit anymore to what they were becoming. So he made the decision to change their name from the Watchers into the Dernacks Arbiters. To signify it more as an Order. All soldiers under it were specially trained. It was from here the order truly started to shape itself and its traditions. Where the famous saying went “In service eternal I wield the helm of duty. Arbiters of unity and sanctity of our protectorate. Shall my blade meet with blood of the unworthy. Then hope its stain may be short as the life of one might sheathe my sword for those who still can be saved” or “Dernack cries for those who can’t see their blessing. As unfit as innocent as they might seem, their defilement shall not steal my duty. For in blood. Sacrifice can only be given in truth to our father. For in blood. Strength shall not be weakened in ignorance. For in blood. Our father gives yet mercy where heretics might be blinded by their guilt of living.” or as in more famous terms “The blessed father shall grant you into excess. Shall you dorn the helm steadfast in peace and violence so shall your brother in arms.” Many who joined after that wore their helms in dignity to their duty. Almost considered more sacred than the pact given between a Dreaming god in blessing and its devotee. Even those who never chose a pact betrayed this creed.
Ritual combat between master and pupil was often. Some arbiters even go as far as killing their predecessor in an attempt to reach a higher rank. Though it wasn’t necessary it was considered a sign of weakness and shame to deny the chain of ascension that grew from this. There were as well many accounts of admiration for those who managed to best their superior. In such length that said superior in death usually even gave in willful respect their helms to be kept as a reminder of their feat and growth accommodated with it. But alas this courtesy was only given to those in the chain of ascension. For it be a sin to take away one's helm in death on duty. Proper respect was given as they were buried or burned with their helm on.
Later on as cities became countries and countries became continents it wasn’t long before the whole world was united under the leadership of the Eternals under the Arbiters and the Church’s guidance. It was from there they realized their claim to power and newfound purpose were slowing down but.. Horr was not so sure they had done enough. The world was united and protected by a powerful army of loyal and dedicated warriors under the ever graceful watch of the dreaming gods which walked among them. Horr knew with the increase in population as well their needs would only be greater. Especially so since the Mark they now were born with.. Increased the life expectancy of their people drastically. Overpopulation and slow dormancy of his warriors as things turned too peaceful for their duty to have weight. He needed things to change… This is where the shift of duty took place. As desperate actions lead to escalated tension. Those who died in ascension were given a ritualistic beautiful helm in recompense for their courageous fight in ritual combat.
Pragmatic resonance:
Horr started to assemble a new branch into the Arbiters ranks. Not warriors.. But Azerilogists or Eternologist and their thought to be unorthodox ways of understanding in the Mark and its power as well.. As some of their gods link to the Azeric. The second fuel of their mostly unknown powers. They were called the Eternalis Azerictics and the founding of Azerilogy and Eternilogy. They were the genius minds of those that grounded our understanding in Mark magic and the Azeric and its various properties. Their ways of experimentation however were unlike the church.. Seen as drastic and usually worked outside the bounds of belief. Something the church very much didn’t tolerate. Horr’s opening up to these so called radicals were the staple of Dernackian ingenuity. But also the rift that started to tear between the Zhjari and the church. Even from the beginning Horr was never fully pious even if he did still have faith for the father. He always had more pragmatic ideals in mind and in the beginning he did indeed find solace and companionship and need for the church. He deemed it necessary to look beyond their conventional understanding.. And needed to dig deeper. His purpose for this branch? The expansion of distant worlds.
The Azerictic Assembly managed research in many fields to both strengthen the military, alleviate areas around infrastructure of their civilization and foremost the creation of ways to travel through space and possibly create gateways to untold realms.
Of course the church didn’t stay idle in this as they tried time and time again to warn Horr about his approach into this kind of research. But Horr would have none of it. His warriors, although many faithful to the church, were ever so more faithful to their duty. But.. There was decadence among his ranks and some who even tried to usurp the Zhjari themselves. But as time went on new magics and constructs were built and even a process to enhance his warriors further were made.
Horr’s arbiters undergo Mark transfusion of their souls.. Binding their eternal life to their helms. Causing almost impenetrable defenses against magical sources and incredible regenerative capabilities. Hardening the helms to an indestructible degree. It’s likeness only in kind to the hardness of Harikoon’s crystalline body. This meant a lot of punishment that was caused on their bodies was circumvented into the helm instead. Causing death is only plausible until the magic that contains it has been fully depleted. This of course were supplanted even further by those that are even stronger in the Marked path and schools of focus thereof.
The church noticed this.. Slowly started to dwindle their attempts of mutiny as realization of futility grasped their minds. Though a second entity within the church grew in unison to this in response to the ever growing order. The Dernack Inquisition and their leader “Nil’juktar Rzquel”. They stood steadfast still against the order and their heretical ventures. For a while they seemed to be curing the streets of radical thinkers. But time would though in the end deem even their growing power and influence to mean null to the ever increasing might of the Arbiters of Dernack.. And the ultimate breakthrough.
Azeric Beyond:
The event that was considered impossible for Dernackians prior to the Eternal Sacrifice. The Azerilogists found a way off Dera into the very expanse of the void above. A propulsion system created wholly from their understanding in the Azeric fundamentals of slipspace. Where meager attempts of travel were attempted with fire magic and explosive propulsion. They found a way to bend the void around them into spasial conveyors. They could bend space itself to propel themselves forward. Warping dark matter to create cataclysmic fields of energy.. Controlled with Azeric magic it could be guided into consistent streams of reactions which could be increased and decreased in desired lengths. In short.. Wherever there existed dark matter they could collect it and then funnel it into a propulsion unit. Theoretically they could do this without storage units as long as there was a constant flow around them.. As where there is matter.. Dark matter is as well.. You just need to know how to reveal and extract it. Though just fueling it by space around you didn’t give enough to warrant much excitement as it brought Azeric crafts along at slow paces. Hence.. The research into magically constructed storage units capable of storing this otherwise volatile chaotic substance in fields of Azeric. With this increase in fuel they could funnel it into carefully constructed metallic devices that later could burst into much stronger and intense bursts of energy causing tremendous increase in speed. The gates to distant worlds were finally open.
Over time the Azerictics made crafts out of fabric.. Stone and metal. Added with magical fields to protect them from outside sources. Being a species which didn’t really care much for breathing. They at first didn’t have to create crafts that took that in mind. We started to bring our people to the moons and planets of our systems.. And it didn't take long before we even colonized them.
With this accomplished. The Inquisition seemed to shift and bow their heads in light of this new Azerilogy and seemed more adamant in trying to.. Reinstate control to the order in attempts to also share in these finds. But Horr.. Horr had other plans in mind.
Gates of eternity:
In secret to even the highest members of the church Horr has conducted others.. Experiments on behalf to further his peoples reach. As they were slowly expanding to distant worlds. He realizes there’s only so far they can take their expansion with what they conventionally made so far. So even more radical ideas were made. What if.. We could shorten the length of travel between worlds.. And plausible other realms altogether by magnitudes of margins? What if we could open the door between ours and the exact world we wish to travel to right on our home?
This was the accomplishment that needed to be succeeded for them to FULLY safeguard their purpose in this life and beyond. Their gods could already open gates to distant worlds.. But they would only do so in demands of GREAT sacrifice. We needed to find a way to mitigate the losses needed to do such a trip and create the capacity for anyone in the empire to traverse the universe without any need for constant sacrifice.. Gateways opened and closed at will.
And.. As the greatest minds in Eternal history basked at the dawn of insanity. They finally did so.
Project: Gate Eternalis or as they later were called Gates of Eternity. Through the study of the Azeric and the means of which our gods travel. They found a link. The gods could travel not because of the souls that were given to them but because of their very link to the Azeric itself. As they are part of this very source they are immune to many of its adverse effects. Sacrifices were more needed to shield those without this link to traverse through this.. Gateway unharmed. But in tandem to research made from the church of Dernack of the creation of Ni’mirin and the various utility they could have. We found that those who have been reformed could travel these gates unharmed. But not only that.. The Ni’mirin had an affinity to traverse it without the god's direct intervention. As their soul is already touched by the Azeric to a degree almost kin to our gods. They could traverse through the fabric of reality as if a dream that shifts into a state or scene. And.. could do so many times over without any negative effects bestowed upon them.
In light of this. There were some Azerictics that wondered if Ni’mirin creatures could carry other entities which aren't as fortunate to be blessed in this way and as the Eternologists would put it survive the surge of Mark that could possibly accommodate this. For fear of the Azeric wasn’t the same. As these beings utilized more the essence of the mark then the Azeric to traverse the realms of reality and through many tests and experimentation. They realized that Ni’mirin beings could safely carry people over with them and even to distant worlds like the distant colonies of their system. They could even with mark manipulation change these reformed into states of being.. Where their sole purpose was to uphold links between worlds. They could even increase the size of said gate by increasing the amount of Ni’mirin holding it up. Later on creating hives of Ni’mirin capable of transporting entire spacecraft. So even if sacrifice still needed to be made in creation of these Ni’mirin.. Once created these Ni’mirin could be utilized over and over again without adverse effects and need to sacrifice more to use these. The only need for such sacrifice came to be when there weren’t enough to go around. So came the Gates of Eternity and with it.. The inquisition stayed wary at the pace Horr’s advances were going.. But most important and not the least.. A new dawn for the Empire at large.
First contact:
With the gates of eternity it was only about time before we would meet new intelligent beings. One such meeting was the Azirlanians and their insectoid and amphibious existence. On the ocean world of Razi and the Azerlani kingdom. Many years have been discussed what a meeting like this could mean to our empire and how to approach it.. But as our nature has been for a long time now. We knew one thing and one thing only. Either they accept the eternals as allies and stalwart protectors as they are brought into the blessed path.. Such as the church decree or they were subjected to our cause as a vassal state. A cry to order like the arbiter's design. If neither of such is accepted.. Horr in his predicament in finding purpose for his warriors would subjugate them by the blade. For Horr he couldn’t let other species think themselves not in need of them. As much as this to him was an opportunity to expand and bastion their order further in control.
They tried the peaceful approach and shared culture and foods and ideas.. Even let some of their children intermingle. At first it seemed that things were going well. Festivals and celebrations were held in honor to us as guests. We even came with gifts to show our good will but.. The Azirlanians were not so impressed by our offers. Some of them seemed curious about our appearance and for some of our own kin we saw likeness between us. Others however returned our kindness by blaspheming the words of Dernack. Calling our gods vile.. Dark.. Judging our way of ascension and the practices of sacrifice which we so willingly give for the many. Of course.. This was in ignorance of the blessed path. So could still be redeemed with time. But their apparent disgust for our ways.. Could still not go unpunished. The church wanted compensation for such insults to their gods. The arbiters wanted blood… Horr nor Razquel were so eager to leave without achieving unity on this ocean world. Horr couldn’t let an opportunity like this go to waste so he pushed on more aggressively telling what might come to pass if they do not see reason in their blindness. Rzquel fuelled the pyre to come with whispers of heresy entailing that these aliens were worshipers of gods thought false and the way they looked at ours. None other than the Dreaming ones could prevail and in such.. Needed to be saved from their own folly. Lest they turn into fuel of the Azeric itself.
The Azirlanians weren’t so welcoming to this approach however and saw the aggression as an instigation towards ill tidings.. So they held resolutely and took up defensive measures.. Welcome to their cities no longer.. Pushed out to the outskirts of their control. In this Horr wanted to attempt to commence a ritual combat with their leaders. Thinking winning over their leaders would somehow sway the rest similar to how their people would. All but one leader accepted.
Hjnderlin, what seemed to be a big insectoid leader equivalent to the Zhjari himself. Through talks held high esteem within the military ranks of the Azirlani military. A man even Horr could find some respect for. Hjnderlin promised at least his unit would join the eternal were he to be defeated. But if he won. Dernack would leave Razi and never set foot on this world ever again. Both Hjnderlin and Horr himself would take part of this and neither of their soldiers would interfere. So the battle commenced… It was a hefty battle which landed many blows between both and time seemed to fly as these two fought. A foe worthy in strength. Horr knew that with the abilities of the Mark he could easily have bested this foe.. Yet he held back in respect to his adversary. Utilizing only his combat experience in the way of the sword to best him. Hjnderlin struck many blows with his axe-like tail and razor limbs, fought bravely and even managed to scar Horr in the process. But the quick motions of Horr and his imperviousness because of the helm of Horr’s end. Hjnderlin never had a chance to begin with. But epic would still be an understatement to this display. As Hjnderlin slumped down and looked at Horr in defeat he asked Horr to grant him one final wish. “As my blood calls to the end.. And you take my final breath. Please great Orischan Horr, Zhjari of the Eternals. Spare my people from an unjust slaughter.. With the show you’ve given me. I can’t say we’d ever have a chance. For I see to this degree you held back. Given time my people might join you as brothers.. As my kin will now. But only in time can it be so freely given.” Horr in deep respect intended to follow in honor to this request. As his blade dug into Hjnderlin’s throat and then cut into his neck. The big insectoid’s head rolled down onto the ground.. In silence this day was kept as nor the Azirlani and the order of Arbiters celebrated in joy. Horr bowed his head in respect. But unbeknownst to Horr Rzquel had other plans in motion. In knowledge that the others wouldn’t be so easily swayed… A scream lit the night.
Azirlanian Cry:
The scream came from an Azirlanian.. a watcher. Out cried the Dernackian “Slit the blind before the mark of the blessed.. ignorance shall be met with blood. Heretics shall not weaken our kin! Let the unworthy flow for their transgression!” Within time the entire room was filled with cries as a blade was put into multiple various Azirlani… stepping out over them the colors of inquisitors stepped into the scene. But this didn't just appear in this arena.. no.. cries could be heard throughout the many halls that tunneled out from the arena.. Hidden blades grow to take out many key targets across the building. Horr in horror watched as a much so sacred ritual was being defiled by his people.. cursing Rzquel for this trickery and their zealous action. Perplexed that they would stoop so low. But Horr would have none as he took defense to the Azirlani still standing.
Horr would not disrespect the last dying breath of a great warrior. Not like this. He himself took his blade and pointed it towards an Inquisitor “How dare you shed innocent blood of the unwilling onto sacred grounds?! Have you no honor? You speak of unworthiness while in desecration of our rites. Brothers if you have any ounce of respect for your creed to your helm, you shall cut down these butchers where they stand. For in duty we protect; only the blood of warriors shall be split in these halls!” Many arbiters in rage didn’t need much from their Zhjari to act. They would gladly slice down their lesser half without remorse as tension between them has grown for years in the making. A bloody feud was brought to this day as kin killed kin and many Azirlanian’s were innocently cut down in the process.. Sadly Horr couldn’t save as many as he wished. But in the end the order prevailed again. Losses however were heavy from both sides as this marked the day of bloody rivalry between the Arbiters and Inquisition. Horr furious and Rzquel resilient in his ideals though poisoned with deceit.
Horr later on learned about the widespread battles that were going on across the city and although he saved a few here.. The inquisition had foolishly convinced the rest of the order to take up arms with them to revolt and take over the capital. All high commands of their people publicly executed.. They had no chance against the magical might of the blessed and the advanced construct they sent through the battlefield.
Horr, forced to follow through with this coup now that too much blood has been spilt, did so apprehensively. Once they had the city under their control, Horr and Rzquel lost full trust in each other. Horr, similar to his approach to the Azerictics, went above and beyond to safeguard as many Azirlanian’s as he could. Promising them that although they might have taken control he’d do everything in his power to ensure the inquisition have no say in their new rule. Horr quickly made sure the Arbiters knew they no longer could trust in the Inquisition and in doing so banned their autonomy within Dernack territory. Having to now go through higher ups before Arbiters and Inquisition would ever work together again. Shortly after news traveled fast and far and outright war was inevitable. A tragic slaughter was brought to those who opposed the new rule as Horr still wasn’t willing to give up their presence now knowing that if they stopped now he’d see the end to everything he had built so far and risk major decline. So started the full subjugation of Razi and the Azirlani. After some years the war ended in the Eternals taking hold of the entire planet. Horr ensured there were still Azirlani to house in their empire. After the new vassal state was created he personally raised memorials of those brave warriors of Azirlani that had been felled by his blade and even erected a statue of Hjnderlin in respect to his word and a reminder of his wish. Trying to redeem the actions brought upon their people. With time Horr was looked up to even by the Azirlani as they recognized the generous deeds of respect. Holding the Zhjari high and still consider him their rightful ruler to this day. Though no love was given to Rzquel or his inquisitors.. Even after finding many who later on joined the church. Nearly none would ever touch the ilk of the inquisition ever spiteful of that day known as the Azirlanian cry..
Eternal March:
Horr knew that change needed to happen.. As their growth to distant worlds and even meeting with civilizations of alien nature. There needed to be a bigger military presence then what the Arbiters could achieve alone. This led to what we now call the Eternal March. As the order now changed their name to the “Eternal Charge” for their eternal service and the founding of the core of our absolute military body. More people were brought in from many schools and various degrees of experience. The order now incorporated into this larger entity more as commanders and leaders for a grander design.
In dismay however both Horr and Rzquel decided in an attempt to not fuel further fire and in agreement to many within the order that a new governing body needed to be made.. To ease the tension between the two big influences. One which is not only controlled by the Charge nor the church. The Dernackian court of Eternalis.
