Laura works as a sewage diver. A very messy and difficult job, but one which she is well suited for. The visibility is basically nonexistent underwater, so her eyes are covered by protective tape as she is put into her suit. Since she breathes only through her blowhole, her mouth is similarly taped up and sealed. Her regulator is fastened securely to the top of her head around her blowhole The only part of her left exposed is her large forehead. Her Cetacean sonar is how she sees beneath the surface. Better than any artificial sonar, her brain can filter out debris and bring into focus any object or surface she is interested in with hardly any conscious effort on her part.
While her sonar may make seeing beneath the brown surface of sewage a trivial task, it remains a dangerous job that takes great care to do safely. Often she is without a direct path to the surface. If she loses her air supply, there is a real danger of drowning. With training and practice, she makes sure to always have several minutes of air in her lungs to buy her time. Either to correct the problem or switch to an emergency air supply.
Unable to speak English, she communicates to others either via Morse code or a series of squeals to indicate "Yes" or "No" answers. A standard intercom lets the crew on the surface talk directly to her as they would with any other diver.
