“Burn like a Fusion Flare! This new drink inspired by Rrshiram will leave you feeling like the legendary dragon of truths!” The drink can read in bold, white and red lettering. A bold promise.
David read the label again upon pulling it out of the fridge. No brand name. No manufacturer. The first and only time he’d ever seen it was at an anime convention. Some kind of Japanese exclusive? Not even the seller knew. But curiosity piqued and David had to try it.
The only other writing on the can was a small warning not to shake the can. “Obviously…” David scoffed. “Who shakes a soda?” As if the universe itself was insulted by the question, David tripped as he shut the fridge door. The closed can dropped to the floor and rolled, disturbing its contents.
David held the can over the sink and opened it ever so slowly. He'd been the victim of a prank more than once. Luckily, there was only a minute spillage. Most of it stayed in the can. He hesitantly took a sip.
White Cherry soda. That's all it was. Nothing reminiscent of Reshiram. No dramatic “draconic” flavor. Not even a hint of spice. Not worth the $10. David sipped at it through the night; he wasn't letting it go to waste.
Eventually, after a few hours playing Pokemon, David turned in for the night. As he climbed into bed, he looked around the room. Pokemon merchandise lined almost every corner. Posters, plushies, and figurines. A good amount of it was featuring Reshiram, the fabled Dragon of Truth. It was easily David’s favorite Pokemon. Even if it was only a myth, he couldn’t help but be enthralled. Its grace. Its power. And one of his deepest wishes was to witness that awe-inspiring form. To experience it. But alas, it was only a dream. David shut the lights and quickly fell asleep.
David’s eyes shot open. He saw nothing. Only the thick veil of darkness engulfing his room. It was late. Very late. He groaned loudly. A fire burnt in his chest. Hot and painful; the worst heartburn he’d ever felt. Was it something he ate? Or drank? David stumbled out of bed and clumsily walked towards the bathroom. He’d never felt such an intense burning before.
Upon reaching out to the small medicine cabinet, his vision finally started to clear; the sleep running from his eyes. And what he saw caused him to gasp. His arm was white. Completely white. A stark difference from his usually well-tanned skin. David looked down at his other arm. Milky white as well.
As if it couldn’t get weirder, David’s hands began to tingle. Pins and needles, but ramped up. His jaw hung open as he held them up to his face. They were changing. Morphing. His fingers started to meld together, going from five fingers to four. The newly diminished digits started to stretch and bend, taking on a shape more akin to claws.
“I’m dreaming. I have to be.” David said as she shut the medicine cabinet with his new claws. And then he saw the mirror. The face that stared back at him wasn’t his own. Familiar, yet alien. It looked like he remembered, but his skin was the same milky white color rather than his usual tan skin. His brown eyes were now a piercing, icy blue. The colors were so familiar, but his mind was too foggy from exhaustion and shock to process it.
As David stared in the mirror, the tingling sensation welled once more in his face. It slowly started morphing. His nose and jaw squashed together and pulled outwards. Completely unrecognizable as a human. It looked more like a cross between a beak and a muzzle. His cheeks flared out, taking on the appearance of ruffled feathers. David’s white hair, formerly black, immediately pushed outwards from his head. It more than doubled in length, stretching down to right above his rear.
A large wing sprouted from behind each arm. He was utterly bewildered, yet curious. Could they actually be used to fly? Draconic. That word floated through David’s mind. The only way he could describe his appearance. And how he felt. This was by far his strangest dream.
Gazing in wonderment at the newly formed dragon wings, the tingling sensation moved to his legs and middle. But there was something else amiss; the bathroom seemed like it was getting smaller. The mirror looked further away. No, he was getting bigger. Taller. He stumbled out of the bathroom, now needing to duck to avoid the door frame, and headed back to his room. With each step, his legs felt bigger. More powerful. There was a loud rip as he ran back; his pants tore off his transforming legs.
There was a full body mirror hanging on the wall of the bedroom. David flipped on the light and looked in it. He looked completely different than when he fell asleep only hours ago. His legs were enormous. Big, bulky, feathery thighs. His feet were much larger now, with his toes stretching and curving into claws like his hands. He was far taller now too. At nearly nine feet tall, his head was almost hitting the ceiling.
As David gawked at his new, massive, feathery body, his eyes wandered. Right next to the mirror sat one of his many Pokemon plushies. Headed by his favorite; Reshiram. The plushie’s face looked eerily familiar. It slowly started to dawn on his foggy brain. The white feathers, the large wings, the powerful thighs, and the draconic muzzle.
“Reshiram? I’m a Reshiram???” David stammered aloud. And it was true. He really was a near perfect embodiment of the legendary dragon. The only thing missing was the tail. Yet as if in response to his unspoken thought, David felt a powerful tingling sensation right above his rear. Almost like a shaking in his spine. The sensation surged as a massive tail rapidly sprouted from the base of his spine. It was long and prominent, with a trio of rings surrounding it.
All traces of David’s human body were gone. He was now the spitting image of Reshiram. Large, powerful. It was unreal. “This has to be a dream, right?” David said aloud. Even his voice sounded different. Deeper. Noble. Fitting of the legendary dragon of truth. And he was giddy. There were times when he’d dreamed of this dragon. Of becoming this dragon. And now it was finally happening. It may have only been a dream, but a truly delightful one.
David was in bliss, playing with his newly formed wings and tail. But then a strange noise started to ring out through the room. It was faint at first; like a soft, gentle hiss. Aike air slowly leaking out of a balloon. David looked around the room, trying to find the source. It sounded like it was coming from underneath him.
A strange feeling began to grow in his middle. Not a tingling like when he transformed into the dragon. Like a wave of pressure. He tracked the source of the hissing noise below him. No, not below. Inside. Inside his draconic body.
His white-feathered belly slowly started to push outwards. David just looked on in confusion. His already large middle was getting bigger and rounder At first, he thought it was just his mind playing tricks on him. A bizarre dream turning even stranger. But then he looked in the mirror again. And sure enough, his belly was quite a bit bigger than before. And it was still growing. Like a balloon filling with air.
The white orb that was his belly quickly ballooned out, stretching out a good foot from his middle. David just stood there, completely bewildered. He gently held his ballooning belly; it was soft, yet taut. It really felt like a balloon as it swelled and pressed against his claws. The dragon’s belly blimped up to the size of a beach ball. Just a giant, round, white mountain protruding from his middle.
“First transforming into a legendary Pokemon. And now inflating like a balloon? This is such a weird dream… but why does it feel so good?” David wondered as he stroked his swollen middle. As his gigantic gut neared the size and shape of an exercise ball, the strange wave of pressure began to expand. But it wasn’t just in his belly any more; the hot air was moving to the rest of his body. David’s draconic arms and wings slowly began to puff out. wings were slowly forced out to his sides as they too were filled with air. The increased size and pressure made them extremely stiff, to the point where he couldn’t even bend them. David slowly started to panic at the sudden loss of mobility. It may have been a dream, but it felt too real.
No part of Reshiram's body was spared from the puffing hot air. His stiff wings swelled huge, like a pair of balloons stuck to his shoulders. Even his long, powerful neck puffed outwards slightly. David tried to exhale and blow out some of the excess hot air; hopefully enough to deflate down. But he couldn’t. His fluffy cheeks filled with hot air, blowing up at the sides of his face. But they swelled so large that he couldn’t even open his mouth. Even David’s long, fluffy tail wasn’t spared. It quickly began to puff outwards, looking more like a giant tube. It swelled and inflated in every direction, making it look like a very long, round, balloon attached to his backside.
David really began to panic now. He wanted to yell, but his puffed cheeks prevented that. His fluffy chest started to puff outwards, quickly matching up with his ballooned belly. Similarly, his back pushed up quickly, giving the dragon’s body a much more rounded shape. David looked much more like a giant balloon now. A completely ballooned, rounded Reshiram. His extremely puffy arms and tail protruded prominently from the massive orb that was his body.
So there David was; stuck as a giant, round Reshiram balloon. Nearly ten feet round, though there was no way for him to actually tell. The only thing he could see was the wall and his ballooning body. But the hissing hadn’t stopped. He was still growing bigger. David’s vision was slowly, completely overtaken by his swelling form. Was this ever going to stop? When would he wake up?
The hissing sounds grew louder. David’s draconic blimp of a body started to swell even faster. He couldn’t see anything other than his swelling chest; his head and puffy arms were slowly engulfed by his growing figure. Something hard pressed against David’s back. The ceiling. He was officially big enough to reach floor to ceiling. At least thirteen feet round. Bigger than a blimp. Furniture was shoved out of the way by the dragon dirigible.
The Reshiram’s growth started to slow, but the airflow did not. His body was growing tighter with each passing moment. Taut feathers, taut skin. A balloon overfilled with air only had two options. And letting out the air wouldn’t work, not with his beach-ball sized cheeks keeping his mouth shut. Tighter and tighter. Loud creaks and squeaks amidst the ever-present hissing sound. David could only wait there, helplessly awaiting the inevitable. The tension was unbearable, until…
BOOOOOOOOM!!
David’s eyes shot open as he jolted up in bed. Bright sunlight filled the room. He was back in bed. “Transforming into a Reshiram, inflating, and popping…” David breathed a loud sigh of relief. “What the hell was that dream? And why did it feel so real?” He rubbed his eye with an arm, but immediately froze. It wasn’t his arm. It was milky white. Feathery. With a very large, still somewhat puffy wing.
David immediately leapt out of bed. And it was then that he noticed something was very wrong with his room. The bed was out of place. Posters and plushies strewn about, as if acted upon by a very strong wind. And as he looked down, the floor seemed much further away than usual. But he already knew what was happening. His oversized, clawed feet felt much heavier than normal. Fearing the worst, David walked over to the mirror.
Reshiram stared back at him. There was no human left; only a large, white dragon Pokemon. David just looked on silently. His white belly was still slightly inflated; like a small balloon jutting out a foot from his middle. The dragon’s tail was still much larger and puffier than any official sightings of Reshiram. Even his wings were still soft and puffy, like they were still partially filled with air.
Last night wasn’t a dream. David really had transformed into the legendary dragon of truths. He had inflated like a balloon. And he popped like an overinflated balloon. It was all real. How? How did this happen? Why did this happen? All of those questions floated through his mind. But they were all second to one, more pressing concern. “An inflated Reshiram… Am I stuck like this?”
