Original Species: Red Crown Wyvern (ver.3)
Well, this is the first instance (and I hope the only) of me remaking a creature not once… but twice. This wyvern... oh this damn wyvern... after I made the previous version of its design back in 2022 (with the first one being from 2021) I was dissatisfied with it VERY quickly. I've had this bastard in the back of my mind for a long time and finally, during my vacation, I remade him, harkening more to the original design with some elements from the second version remaining. I wonder how long I will remain satisfied with this one...
The Red Crown Wyvern is one of the largest wyvern species known to inhabit the world and THE largest one on Arcadia. Native to the dry and open regions of the continent, this winged beast soars over its territory in search of prey. It relies on its speed and aerial maneuverability to hunt and to evade larger predators. It's one of the more dangerous wyverns out there.
It has 4 main ways of attack:
1) Tooth and claw close combat;
2) A venomous bite;
3) Deadly spikes that it can fire from its tail;
4) And, of course: A Flame-Breath.
Widely recognized as one of the most aggressive wyverns, it will attack anything that it perceives as a threat. It dominates any area in which it can rule unopposed, acting as the de facto "bully" to every other predator.
However, in regions where True Dragons make their dwellings, this phenomenon is not as prominent. The presence of a True Dragon (especially a Red, Green, or White one) effectively dethrones the Red Crown Wyvern from its position as "top dog". Like any bully, it stops acting tough once there's someone bigger and meaner than it.
Despite its aggression towards other living beings, the Red Crown Wyvern shows a completely different side of itself to its closest kin. Males and females mate for life and raise anywhere from 3 to 5 young every other year after a 3-month brooding period. The hatchlings remain under the care of their parents for around 15 months after hatching during which they learn to fend for themselves before being chased off and made to find their own territories. The young need to be chased off to prevent competition between them and their parents for resources (and to avoid even the slightest risk of inbreeding). The parents then take a 6 month "vacation" before breeding again.
By 15 months, they young are around 1/3 of the size of their parents which makes them large enough to survive one gazelles, antelope and other smaller animals and leading a nomadic lifestyle, before they can establish themselves on their own land, which typically occurs once they are around 7 to 10 years old.
