_______________________________________________________________________For quite a while, octofolk and merfolk have had an ongoing rivalry- be it over land, resources, or both. It certainly didn't help that the octo side was struggling to keep its species afloat, resulting in them resorting to rather questionable practices in order to prevent such. Octokin were seen as outlaws instead of awe- inspiring rarities.
Sewn had, as it would seem, made contact with a member of the octo- side, and as such his genetics would kick in, and eventually he had an octowolf form of his own... only to later learn of the rift between the two species. Even after he had obtained a merform, he decided to look into the history of what caused this initial separation between the two similar species- the only records of which being found within the grand library of the nearest undersea city. It didn't help that octofolk weren't allowed inside the city, as details of what caused the separation had become rather muddled on their end. According to his retrieved sources, it was apparently the cause of an octo hybrid being spooked about the news another octo had shown them, and accidentally inking within the vicinity of the king of the city at the time as a result. Contact with said ink then transformed them into another octo like themselves. While the instance of an octofolk inking is now known to be extremely rare, they were still seen as too dangerous to be kept around back then and were said to potentially endanger the merfolk species... it's a silly reason, though it's ironic how it's now the other way around.
Fast forward a few years since then with Sewn scouting the untouched open ocean, when he soon came across a large, lone island in the middle of the ocean. Peeking out from the water, it seemed to have a large white building built atop it, with a number of scientific work stations. He also spotted what seemed to be a black and purple avali pacing around each work station outside, clearly stressed about something. Sewn saw this as a potential opportunity to help grow the octo species, so after a bit of hesitation, he decided to swim over to a nearby stream and shout over to get their attention, keeping their lower body hidden at first.
The avali was shocked and surprised to hear of someone all the way out here, not apparently knowing of the existence of mer and octo- folk. They were about to ask why they were talking from the river and if they could come up, and if they were a diver then why didn't he have any gear on- but Sewn waived away the questions and asked why they seemed so stressed out. The avali pouted and sat down on a nearby tree stump, chin in her claws. They hesitated with saying anything, until finally deciding to explain how a private government had essentially hired a "burner researcher" to gather data from the surrounding area, with limited resources and communication- with emphasis on the latter- as they then went on to say that they hadn't heard from them in a year or so, making her think they forgot about them. They had no way off this island, and as an avali, they were stuck in a rut. They had also undergone a procedure which made them forget much of their past prior to taking the job, causing them further mental strain. After a moment of silence, they apologized for dumping all of this information on Sewn, exclaiming that they just hadn't had anyone to talk to for a while, that her name was Ranala, and that it was nice to talk to someone for the first time in what felt like forever.
Sewn was at a standstill now. This was no longer someone that deserved to be taken advantage of. This was someone who needed help, especially if their story is to be believed. During Sewn's hesitation, Ranala was about to get up and head back inside with their head hung low, before Sewn decided to break the act and come out of the water, tentacles limping and slipping up over the grass, much to Ranala's shock.
"...My name is Sewn, and... perhaps I could offer you a way out."
From there on, Sewn was invited into the big white building- Ranala in utmost awe at Sewn's features the whole way through- which is something he wasn't used to very much. Room to room, he saw broken vials, torn and crumpled mountains of paper, and toppled- over servers and exposed wire. Their story certainly seemed to be adding up. He couldn't fulfill what Ranala's supposed higher- ups would desire- hell, he wasn't even sure if they still cared, much less knew she existed. Sewn could've just inked on them and turned them into an octo like himself, but he knew that the negative status of the octokin that Ranala would eventually learn of would just make them feel held off from civilization all over again. So instead, with her help, they had managed to combine Sewn's ink into a chemical formula which altered it enough to the point where they were transformed into a mervali instead. Ranala were a bit too eager to drink the formula when they were still in the lab, requiring Sewn to haul them off in their tentacles into the ocean, but once in the water, they couldn't help but express themselves how free they felt. Free from the shackles of the island and their higher- ups, with so much of the planet now opened up to explore in this new form. Sewn was happy to have gifted them a freedom of sorts, but in his mind, he considered the fact that his ink- which was the reasoning for this fracture between species in the first place- was instead used to transform someone into a merfolk- not to mention this was the closest he had been to a merfolk in a while- made him realize that in the end, they truly weren't so different. Perhaps, if given the time, the two species could find common ground once again._______________________________________________________________________
