Original Species: Desert Blood Fly
The Eastern Deserts of Elysium are home to a nasty, horrible insect called the Desert Blood Fly.
Superficially resembling a cross between a mosquito and a scorpion, this foul creature is somehow worse than the two invertebrates it converged on as it evolved. It is equipped with a saw-like rostrum that allows it to pierce through the skin of its prey, all to reach the prey's blood. If the targeted creature has skin too thick to pierce through, the Blood Fly will implement its other weapon: a spray of acid which it shoots from the end of its abdomen. The acid allows the Fly to access the blood of creatures as large and formidable as the Gigatusk Boar.
The most unfortunate thing about the Blood Fly is that it doesn't use its acid on only the largest creatures... If this insect finds prey that shows resistance, such as a struggling human, it may use the acid to subdue the prey permanently (especially when the Blood Flies form a swarm). While for a creature the size of a Gigatusk Boar the attacks of the Blood Fly may cause slight irritation and discomfort, medium-sized creatures (all humanoid races included) may perish from such an attack (if not from the blood loss, then from infections).
One notable thing is that the Blood Flies seem to get very confused by striped patterns. Researchers thus began theorizing that THIS may be the reason why species such as the Striped Lagolope have developed stripes (not just for thermoregulation).
Travelers are thus advised to either wear striped clothing or invest heavily in barrier spells when venturing through areas housing the Blood Fly. These bugs have rather specific tastes for their dwellings:
- the area needs to have several cacti and grasses growing near one another;
- the area needs to have firm, sandy soil that is easy to burrow in and not collapse;
- the area needs to be frequented by various, preferably large creatures;
Oddly enough, these bugs don't need water to reproduce (unlike Earth mosquitoes).
