Three sisters were watching over a busy construction site, waiting for their brother to join them.
“You know, while I still approve of the overall project, I keep having afterthoughts about the location…” quietly said Saavitri, leaning into her sister’s ear.
“You mean afterthoughts about ghosts allegedly haunting our recently acquired real estate? I thought you had already surveyed it with your magic, didn’t you?” chuckled Raagini, her snake-hairs facing Saavitri and flicking their tiny forked tongues in unison, as if mocking her.
“You can’t dismiss the existence of ghosts out there just because I made sure there are none in this specific location! And that’s beside the point I actually wanted to make…” she said, her own snake-hairs hissing in response while her glowing tattoos surged in brightness; “…had we bought something that wasn’t half-ruined, we wouldn’t be stuck in renovations this long!”
“Hmpf… what does Xavier think about it?” asked Raagini.
The large, blind ophidian’s head raised from the ground where it was resting, grumbling a little before answering. She was the quietest and most introvert of the trio, to the point she was generally most content when being left unbothered, seemingly doing nothing. Others would consider it laziness, when she’s instead immersed in hours of meditation, yet always vigilant and protective over her dear sisters with stoic abnegation.
“Xavier finds the smell of dust, fresh cement and paint quite unpleasant. Xavier also wishes to seclude away from the loud and hammering construction site noises. But this is temporary and ultimately beneficial to our business. Renovations would have been unavoidable anyway; there are hardly any buildings designed to accommodate for the plethora of special needs we need to satisfy” she said with a sibilant voice.
That’s when their brother finally arrived, calling them.
Saavitri was first to react to the familiar voice, turning around and thus yanking the poor Raagini with her while also twisting Xavier’s tail with a jarring motion at the same time… Xavier didn’t complain as usual, but Raagini stared daggers at her sister from behind her coloured glasses for a moment.
You see, they are no ordinary sisters, but rather a trio of conjoined siblings! Almost like a mythological hydra given their serpentine nature, or rather a twin-headed Medusa… if Medusa also shared her lower body with a giant, albeit blind, serpent. Having grown together in such condition, they naturally reached a great level of coordination, but at the end of the day they are still three separate people who happen to share the same body… and mistakes happen.
“Xsara!” called their brother; despite generally preferring to be treated as three separate individuals who happen to share a body, the conjoined siblings can appreciate the convenience of a collective name from time to time… hence the name ‘Xsara’ from the combination of their initials. It also happens to sound almost like ‘Sarah’, making it easier for new friends!
“Please don’t ssstrain yourself for me” hissed the familiar snake person, slithering up to them.
It was their brother Xekese; together they were quite a sight of curious looking hybrid snake people as the male naga sported two pairs of arms and twin tails! Xsara secretly envied Xekese a bit, and not just out of sibling rivalry, but because at least physically, he was everything they were not: a quirky and unique individual… whereas they were a trio of incomplete and co-dependent twins.
“Finally, what took you so long? Actually, we don’t care… shall we tour the place? This could be the last chance for adjusting the renovation plans in case you’d like to contribute with any suggestion” said Xsara, which usually means Saavitri and Raagini do most, if not all, of the talking by finishing each other’s sentences.
And so they slithered in together amidst the busy workers, trying to ignore their curious looks and the irking dust collecting on their belly scales... no solace of shoe soles for snake people!
The first thing Xekese noticed was the very tall and wide entrance:
“Sso big... I can barely reach the top!” He commented as he stretched upwards, having to use a lengthy portion of his serpentine lower body to lift himself up!
“So taurs and giants can also fit through” explained Xsara, gesturing for him to come inside.
“Oh and I see you’re replacing all stairs with ramps! I very much approve of that, maybe we’ll get to meet other slithering friends as customers" he then said.
“...We were mostly worried about wheelchair-bound people but yes, that’s something we can also appreciate” said Xsara.
Opposite to the entrance, a balcony was under construction, facing the river.
“Nice view...” he playfully said, his serpentine tail allowing him to lean over and dangle seemingly precariously from the unfinished balcony, while in fact hooked securely to something solid.
“And not just that: we’ve hired experts to engineer some contraption that will be integral to this balcony and act as a lift for aquatic people! Standing right over the riverbank and less than a kilometre away from the estuary, we’re basically at the crossroad for both fresh water aquatics coming from upstream and salt water merfolk swimming up from the sea! We’ll be the first inn to truly serve ALL people!” explained Xsara.
“Asssuming they wish to get along with each other…” he quipped, recoiling back to stand with Xsara.
“Xekese, if we don’t even make the effort, non-humans will be the ones ending up marginalized… and after that, the ‘freaks’ among the already marginalized will be the outcast” she said; they hated that word, but it made a point.
Even Xekese, a conjoinment-free person, got called so a few times for simply being a half naga, half deva creature.
“On the other hand, if we manage to give a sense of bonding and community to everyone, we might just get along and make it easier for people like us too”
Xekese didn’t say anything at first, but his twin tails curled inwards into a heart shape as a sign of fondness.
“And how will the inn hosting sssuch a hodgepodge of people be named?” he asked.
“We haven’t come up with a name yet… but you’re giving me ideas~”
