“Full-Moon to Nebula. Come in Nebula.” Shirley, a Pokemon Ranger, whispered into a walkie-talkie.
The walkie-talkie emitted quiet static for a few moments before a voice crackled forth from the other end.
“Loud and clear Full-Moon.”
Shirley nodded and then took a few steps back from the concrete wall she was up against. “I’m standing outside The Nest. Waiting for word to Fly.” Shirley said. It was a code to let her fellow rangers know she was ready to breach a Team Rocket Base they’d been trying to locate for a while now.
“Roger. Take flight. Collect any eggs and scramble any omelets you find.”
“Affirmative. Over and out.” Shirley clicked the Walkie-Talkie off and stuck it in her shorts’ pocket. She then took a deep breath.
“Get in…rescue any Pokémon…arrest any Rocket Members.” Shirley reiterated to herself. It always helped keep her calm during a high-stakes mission. She had done a full survey of the area earlier, the pale moonlight of the full-moon above worked wonders for that. Shirley expected it to also work to her detriment, as it would’ve allowed any guards to see her more easily. Oddly though, the base was entirely unguarded. Even with the smallest Rocket Bases, there would at least be some low-level grunt outside the door, or some flimsy front business…but then again, this base was in a rather isolated place in Kanto, so maybe they just didn’t anticipate anyone finding it.
Taking another deep breath, Shirley looked to her Pokeball-Belt. Each of the four balls were lightly shaking around with determination, each Pokémon inside encouraging her in their own little Poke-Language.
Shirley took a few steps back, then ran up and kicked the door open and ran inside.
Shirley was met with a blindingly-white entrance room. It was uncomfortably sterile. No chairs, no propaganda posters, nothing but two trash cans on either side of a simple door. Something was immediately off to Shirley. This resembled a covert science lab more than anything…Shirley would know, she’d busted a few in the past.
But all of a sudden, one of the trash cans began to shake around, and before Shirley could do anything, a Hypno jumped out of it and began swinging its pendulum right at Shirley’s eye level. Before Shirley knew it, her entire world melted into a sea of beautiful colors…everything but the pendulum…it swung back and forth in such a mesmerizing way, Shirley just couldn’t look away. It was like all of her troubles melted away in that one moment…she felt so relaxed….she could just..fall asleep.
…And that’s exactly what she did. The ranger passed out and hit the floor with a nasty thud. They Hypno snickered malevolently before dragging the woman through the door, down a hallway, and into a room at the far end of it. It was a testing facility of sorts. A stark-white room with a one-way mirror for Rocket Scientists to watch experiments take place from a safe distance.
“Is everything in order?” Executive Ariana asked one of the scientists as the Hypno left the room and locked the door behind it. The Hypno also snatched Shirley’s pokeballs as it left.
“Yes ma’am. Just waiting on your word to begin.” The scientist sputtered.
“You better hope you have this right. If this goes wrong, we’ll be in even more trouble with the Rangers.”
The scientist gulped and wiped some sweat from her brow. Shortly afterwards, the Hypno walked back in and set Shirley’s pokeballs on a table. The pokeballs all shook angrily as it did so.
“W-Well Ma’am, even if this experiment goes wrong, at least we can use her Pokémon for Team Rocket’s sake.” The scientist stammered.
Ariana didn’t respond. She merely crossed her arms haughtily and watched out of the window, waiting on Shirley to wake up.
It took a few more minutes, but the ranger eventually stirred back to consciousness, getting to her hands and knees where she tried to reach for her now-missing Pokeballs.
“H-Huh?!” Shirley squeaked, getting up to her knees and glancing around the room in a panic.
“Start it up.” Ariana commanded. The scientist quickly did as she was told, flicking a switch which caused a loud fan to turn on in the testing room.
“Ditto particles are flowing into the room…should be an adequate level in about two minutes.” The scientist explained.
As soon as the fan started up, Shirley dashed to the door and began desperately trying to bash it down. Unfortunately, it was no use. The door was sturdier than an Aggron.
After the failure of that idea, Shirley gritted her teeth and feverishly pulled out her walkie talkie. This had to work…Shirley had to do something, anything…she could already feel something soaking into her skin…something very uncomfortable and unnerving.
“FULL-MOON TO NEBULA FULL-MOON TO NEBULA! I NEED BACKUP NOW! MISSION IS A FAILURE! BACKUP NEEDED NOW! I DON’T HAVE MUCH TIME!”
All Shirley was met with was static. She began smacking the device over and over again in an attempt to get it to work right. And while that was happening, the scientist on the other end of the glass leaned into a microphone on her desk.
“Transform.” She spoke. Her words carried into a loudspeaker in the testing chamber, which further carried to the Ditto particles that were now embedded in Shirley’s skin.
Shirley let out a gasp of panic and shock as she felt her body tremble.
“HNNRGGH-! REPEAT, MISSION FAILED! MISSION FAILED! MISSION FAILED! COPY NEBULA! COOOPY NEBULAA!”
No response.
Shirley let out an animalistic growl of rage and threw the walkie-talkie as hard as she could against the mirror, causing a sizable crack in the mirror.
Ariana slammed her hands onto the desk in a moment of shock. “Is that glass going to hold?! Can she break through it?!”
“F-Fear not ma’am…” The scientist began. “She won’t be able to get through in time. The changes to her mental state won’t allow for it.”
Immediately, Shirley ran for the mirror and went to kick it. But when she wound up the kick, she found herself unable to complete it. Shirley found herself…wanting to obey. To serve, like any good Rocket Grunt would.
“N-No…” Shirley huffed as she gripped her head, trying to fight against the changes.
Her brown hair soon began to stick to her head and neck, growing out into a long and fluffy mane of fur, which took on a bright, sickly white color. Her bangs also grew into a large tuft of fur with a black edge to it.
Shirley let out a loud scream of horror as she fell to her hands and knees, heaving as she began to hyperventilate.
“HELP ME! SOMEONE! PLEASE! I-“ Shirley tried to call out for her Pokemons’ names, to draw them out of their balls…but it was like her own body was preventing her from calling for them.
Shirley let out another animalistic growl as her face grew more of the white fur, though the edges of her face took on a more red coloration. Once her face was entirely coated, it began to painfully stretch out, as did her teeth, leaving her with a ferocious, wolf-like snout.
“MAKE IT-!! STO-OOO-OOO-OOPP!” Shirley begged the sky. In the process of doing so, the skin on her arms was rapidly eaten away by the growing fur. It took on the red coloration her face did at first, before transitioning into the white color. Her fingernails then started to grow into deadly, rock-like claws.
Shirley could only muster up angry, aggressive growls at this moment. Shirley rolled over onto her back, which felt rather odd, as the mane of fur had grown to about halfway down her back. It pressed uncomfortably against her clothes, as well as her back itself.
“Urgghhh-! Grrrrghhh! Must….f-fight….it…OFFFFFF!” Shirley roared, rapidly losing the fight for her own body and mind. Her eyes began to glow a sinister red as she snarled and twitched.
As the fur worked its way down Shirley’s legs, they began to change as well, first shifting into a digitigrade position, which caused Shirley several moments of pain in the process. Following that, her feet began to change to fit the rest of her body, starting with them reshaping into a set of rugged paws. They quickly began to grow out, as well as Shirley’s toenails going through the same changes her fingernails. Shirley’s boots strained against the pressure for a few moments before her claws started to poke through. Shortly afterwards, Shirley let out a snarl and clawed her boots off the rest of her way with her finger-claws.
“Grrr…rrgghh…fight…fight….for…T-Team Rocket…” Shirley started to smile a wicked smile as she rose to her paws, throwing off that stupid ranger hat.
Shirley chuckled a few times, then threw her head to the ceiling and let out a bone-chilling howl of triumph. The old Pokemon Ranger was gone now.
Shirley then looked towards the outfit she still wore…With this context, she figured it made her look like some sort of goth chick…and she was all for it. Just paint it black and slap a Rocket insignia somewhere on there and she’d be good to go!
“Alright Ms Ariana…the experiment is a success.” The scientist said, feeling accomplished.
“Haha! Yes! This is amazing! A whole new branch of technology we can use to subjugate the world under Team Rocket!” Ariana cackled. She then looked towards the shaking pokeballs in the corner of the room.
“…Perhaps we could apply this in other ways too…” Ariana thought aloud as she looked back into the testing chamber, meeting eyes with Shirley, who was staring at the glass as if she could see through it.
Either way…this experiment was a landslide success. A former Pokemon Ranger was now ready to serve Team Rocket.
