Today I finally got a call from my psych office that they have a spot for me to get my first proper ADHD screening, which'll be in two weeks! Hurray!
Of course, that meant the imposter syndrome which I'd been keeping -mostly- at bay for now just came creeping right back up. Hell, I've had my ASD diagnosis for nine years now and I -still- at times wonder if I'm just faking it.
Having chats with my fellow neurospicy friends helps a lot, as well as practising self compassion and analysing those thoughts. My brain has basically been trained to be convinced I'm Just Lazy And Stupid since I was 7; I was practically always the slowest in class with maths tasks, as well as struggling with following instructions/staying focused, so brain's gotten to practice being mean to me plenty! Breaking that habit and learning to ignore self deprecating thoughts is going to take a while.
So here are some important PSAs for all of you who're struggling:
- Executive dysfunction is not laziness.
- You deserve help. You are not wasting the psychologist's time.
- Struggling with maths/homework/studying does not make you stupid. Your brain just processes information differently.
- Your struggles don't make you a Failed Adult. Being kind to yourself isn't 'enabling bad behaviour', it's taking care of yourself.
I'd also like to thank https://www.theminiadhdcoach.com/ whose work has helped so much on my journey to self acceptance and to work up the courage to get assessed in the first place. 100% can recommend.
Might make more little comics/illustrations about the whole process.
