Here we see two brand new GE U13C's on the Admiralty, just recently taken over from the Merchant Navy's, passing Alton, Hampshire. This is a London Waterloo - Seamouth service. There were two Admiralty services, one went from Waterloo to Portsmouth while the other (this one) went from Waterloo to Seamouth. It originally was made to serve the Royal Navy but its now a special luxury train pulled by the finest of locomotives.
Usually it is served by a single local but today we see two GE U13C's on it due to the SWML at Basingstoke being closed causing trains to divert along the Mid Hants Railway. Due to the bank from Alton towards Alresford, this was nicknamed the Alps. Because of this, two locomotives are needed to pull the train up the gradient.
(Circa, 1968)
As of 2024, both Admiralty services usually see the Class 444 and Class 442.
