Gazelle - Three-light Tanzanite
We have seen several examples of rocks infused with arcane power in previous pages: the soul-infused fossil, powder of Lerna, iridescent obsidian, grey clay (NSFW) and kobolstein, for example. There are still others, such as labradorite with its 1001 reflections, that I have not yet had the time to put down on paper. We will come back to that later.
By mortal human standards, tanzanite is a blue- and violet-coloured variety of zoite, often used in jewellery. The name of this variety comes from the country where it was ‘discovered’ by non-native mortals from this moor. However, this stone existed long before them and was used long before they named the lands according to their concepts of borders. The cut gemstone can reveal sapphire-blue, violet or red reflections depending on the angle of illumination, a characteristic known as trichroism.
Three-light tanzanite is a refined version of this effect. Instead of reflecting light in different colours depending on the angle, it reflects all three colours at the same time in a hypnotic ballet. But watching this play of light for too long has one consequence: a metamorphosis into a gazelle.
From then on, certain human groups gave this stone to one of their number, often an individual considered to be wise who was partially sighted or blind. In this way, he was never subjected to the effect of the stone, but used it when necessary. Such magic was respected, feared even, because it was only used when one of their own went beyond the limits of their laws, usually through extreme violence or treachery. The soul of the traitor, as they were called, was then considered to be tainted and only a magical conversion could enable them to re-establish a form of balance, both for nature and for the group of individuals. He was forced to look at the tanzanite with its three reflections and, hypnotised, he gradually changed into this animal, considered to be noble and pure.
As for the link between the stone and the animal, there is little information to support any of my hypotheses. The most likely hypothesis is that the mines where the mineral was found were close to the animal's home.

No. As said, looking at the reflections of the three-light tanzanite results in a metamorphosis into a gazelle. The whole vein of this rock gives this result, several pieces were scattered and gave the same result. Another vein of three-light tanzanite also results in gazelle transformation.
There are several rocks with magical properties, but not all of them transform people. Grey clay, for example, gives an effect of elasticity but does not in itself transform people into animals. Kobolstein turns you into a kobold but it is not an animal. Other stones can be used for other purposes, such as the dreams of labradorite with its 1001 reflections.
Research into the link between stone and animal is not one of my priorities.
