Footsteps Of Fortune: A Step Too Far. PART TWO.
It was a quiet evening in the city square. The streetlights cast long shadows across the building, the street lamps flickered faintly and Kai stumbled forward, his fur matted with sweat. His feet - his cursed insufferable feet - had been moving nonstop, pulling him into dances, leaps, and spins against his will. They had pulled him into the local park, which was thankfully empty.
“Can’t we… take a break?” Kai gasped, his legs trembling beneath him. His heart pounded as his feet forced him into yet another extravagant routine, “Please! I can’t do this anymore!”
His right foot chuckled, its voice smooth and smug. “Come on, Kai, this is what you wanted, isn’t it? Speed? Precision? Brilliance? We’re giving you all of that.”
“I didn’t ask for you to be smarter than me!” Kai growled, his voice shaky with exhaustion. He stumbled, nearly tripping over himself as his feet swung him into a tight turn.
The left foot tapped its toes teasingly .
“Maybe if you’d thought your wish through, you wouldn’t be in this mess. But then again, you’ve never been the sharpest, have you?”
“Stop saying that!” Kai snapped, his eyes flashing with frustration and tears oeixlinblurrinf his vision . His feet responded by spinning him faster, dragging him across the grass in a dizzying spin. His claws scraped the mud, leaving tracks and a trail of his impossible situation.
Kai spotted a lamppost up ahead and in a moment of sheer desperation, he grabbed for it. His hands wrapped tightly around the metal post and his body trembled as he clung to it with all his strength.
“I’m not moving,” Kai panted, his chest heaving. “I’m staying right here!”
His feet paused for a second, as if amused by his defiance before his right foot gave a bemused laugh.
“You really think that’s going to stop us?”
“I’ll hold on for as long as it takes!” Kai whimpered, holding the lamppost even tighter.
His muscles strained and his claws dug into the metal. For the first time since this nightmare had begun, he felt a small sense of control.
“You can’t move without me!”
The left foot sighed, almost sounding disappointed.
“Kai, we’ve been pulling you through your hole life. You really think we can’t do it again?”
Before Kai could respond, his feet gave a sharp tug, trying to pull him away from the lamppost. Kai winced at the sudden pain in his arms, which were shaking but he still held on for dear life. However his feet were stronger and faster since Kai had his wishes granted and, more than that, they were relentless.
“Kai, this is embarrassing,” the right foot taunted, pulling harder. “Just let go. You know you can’t outlast us.”
“No!” Kai grunted, his grip slipping slightly. “I’m not… going anywhere!”
Kai's memory drifted back to the genies wish and his brain swam in turmoil. He knew that if he refused to exercise and ignored his fitness regime, he'd lose all his strength and muscles. If that happened he'd never be able to resist his feet. On the other hand, Kai figured that to beat his own feet, he'd either have to get stronger or find another genie. All these options weighed heavy on his mind, but one thing was certain - his feet needed to let him have a break. Even a strict fitness buff would know when to stop, but his feet were having none of it.
They pulled harder and harder, jerking Kai's legs out from under him until his hands began to lose their hold. The strain in his arms was unbearable, and his muscles screamed in protest. Finally, with a powerful tug, his feet ripped him away from the lamppost, sending Kai falling across the ground.
Kai let out a cry of pain and frustration as his arms scraped across the grass and rocks. He reached out aimlessly to grab anything to try and keep his body still but it was useless agaisnt his feet, who were trying to force Kai upright again.
“You just don’t know when to give up, do you?” the right foot said, sounding far too pleased with itself.
The left foot flexed its toes once more, almost sarcastically.
“You’re just slowing us down, Kai. The sooner you accept that, the better.”
Before Kai could even catch his breath, his feet yanked him forward and instinctively, without even thinking about it, Kai pushed his body back upright before his feet kicked into a quickstep. His body jerked forward, and once again, he was forced to move in perfect time with their rhythm.
“No! Please!” he begged, stumbling as they span him mercilessly. His tail swished behind him as he was thrown around, his hands flailing in a desperate attempt to regain control. “I can’t do this anymore! I’ll… I’ll do better! I’ll listen! Just let me rest!”
His feet slowed, for a moment, as if considering his plea. Kai collapsed to his knees, panting heavily, his entire body shaking from exhaustion.
“Do you think we should let him rest?” the right foot asked, its voice brimming with amusement.
The left foot tapped thoughtfully.
“He does look pretty pathetic, doesn’t he?”
Kai’s breath slowed in relief. Maybe - just maybe - they would stop.
“Please,” he whispered, his eyes prickling with tears and exhaustion, “Just…stop…”
But then his right foot gave a playful twitch.
“Not yet,” it said with a gleeful tone.
Before Kai could react, his feet jerked him back upright and broke into another wild, intricate dance. This time it was a tango, the steps sharp and precise, dragging him across the park with a speed and agility he never would have been able to manage on his own.
Kai let out a strangled cry and his legs burned with the effort at the forced movement.
“No…please! I can’t...”
“Oh, you can,” his right foot laughed, “You wished for this, remember? All that speed. All that strength. You never had, all that skill and now you’ve got it!”
“But…but not this way!” Kai choked, tears streaming down his face as his body was dragged through the routine. “I wanted to be smart…to be strong! I can’t keep up!”
His left foot hummed a tune as they danced.
“And that’s the lesson, isn’t it, Kai? You’ll never be as fast or as clever as us.”
Kai sobbed, barely able to keep himself upright as his feet moved faster and more demanding with every step. His breath came in ragged gasps and his muscles screamed in protest. No matter how hard he tried, his feet were always a step ahead, always in control.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, his feet slowed, letting him collapse once more to the ground. For a long, quiet moment, they were still, and Kai hoped it was finally over.
But then, with a soft clicking of their claws, his feet twitched back to life.
“Ready for round two?” the right foot teased.
Kai’s heart sank as his feet pulled him upright once more, dragging him into yet another unstoppable dance. As they whirled him through the moonlit park, the one thing Kai knew for sure was that no matter how fast and fit he had become, he would never outsmart his own feet.
