Makes me wonder about the mechanics of who gets a "proper" transformation and who is turned into a horrible abomination.

If a bite from one of the unstable mutants caused the kid to fully transform into a cat, it's possible that guy is going to be...fine, whatever he's becoming :P.

Just going off of what we've seen im guessing it has to do with how big you are. As in if it tries to turn you into something bigger than you already are you explode into a bloodborne boss.

Alright, I think I've got a theory about this transformative epidemic.
So we got the monstrous mutations that are absolutely shagged. No saving them. Let's call them gen one. They're the result of whatever transition vector that got to them. The 'disease' gets into them, starts morphing them and wreaking total havoc with first gen's immune system.
Then there's the next gen after the first transmits it to a new host (gen 2). The 'disease' has had time to acclimate to human biology and physiology. No doubt, the first gen's immune system also had some part in mutating the 'disease' to some degree and making it far less chaotic, leaving gen 2's more intact physically and mentally. It's like gen 1 got the worst of it, then inoculated the 2nd gen with a much more mild version when it was transmitted.
