inking in photoshop, etc. is overrated

So if you don't mind explaining, For a newb like myself, what would the easiest or simplest way to ink a doodle in Illustrator? Since I do have Adobe Illustrator 9.0.1 but I have never used it.

If you're using a tablet, the Paintbrush tool is probaly the most convient tool you can use to ink. If you don't want to use pressured lines, you can also use the pencil tool. I'd usually reccomend the pen tool if you're going for something mechanical or you're trying to go for extra-precision details. Use the Smooth Tool and Eraser Tool (hold the mouse button over the pencil tool button) for clean-up afterwards.

I used to use the Pen tool for all of my work before I found out about the whole Paintbrush deal. While the Pen tool isn't bad, it can be a serious pain in the ass to use if you don't know what you're doing. At the same time however, I don't really reccommend using the Paintbrush tool if you just have a mouse, since it'll lack that "organic" feel.

...I believe you could use vector trace on the pic first.

That is, scan it, then have Illustrator "trace" over it. Have the tracing as a layer, or even a second layer if you mess up.

to be honest i never liked the tracing feature too much, especially with how messy my sketches look. :P
