Meep and Sticky were resting in the shade. Their journey from California to Oklahoma was a long one indeed, and the desert had seriously slowed them up. They had been sprinting most of the time, but neither the whippet or the greyhound were in the racing shape that they had once been.
Sticky, a blue greyhound stood up and looked across the vast dessert, eager to get to their new forever home. Meep, a lithe brindle whippet turned her head to watch the larger dog as she stared across the endless mounds of sand.
“Let's have a race,” the greyhound exclaimed.
“Its too hot,” Meep returned.
“It will be fine. The time will go by faster,” Sticky yipped.
Giving up, the little whippet stood up, stretching out her front legs. She stood next to her friend, sure her short legs would lose to Sticky's much longer ones. She glanced up at the blue hound and nodded her head. A smile crept across Sticky's pointed muzzle.
“Ready,” both dogs crouched, “Set,” their back legs were ready to spring, “Go!”
They both took off, Sticky obviously ahead of the run by about half of her length. Meep tried to keep up, making her strides longer and longer until the tip of her nose was at the mid point of Sticky's head. Even though the air was hot and dry, at this speed it was rather cooling to the little dog. She allowed her eyes to drift close as she enjoyed the air speeding around her.
When she opened them again, Sticky was no longer next to her. Meep stopped suddenly and looked around, but there was no dog to be seen anywhere. She back traced her steps a bit, but the blue greyhound was no where to be seen. She turned to the direction she was running and saw grass. Perhaps her mind had tricked her. Perhaps there really was no Sticky here. She trotted forward, allowing her paws to be surrounded by the cool grass and relaxed, continuing to look for the other dog.

This did turn sad very suddenly! xD But I like it! I was originally going to ask for something dark, but wasn't sure if you'd OK it, so I left the characters' plot so open. But then it DID turn dark, so, I'm happy! xD
Poor Meep sounds like a lonely little stray! Maybe Sticky was just a result of that mentioned cactus juice. he was fun company while he was there, though!
