I really do have to be careful. I didn't transition out of gear from the last story, and almost fell behind in posting!
Anyways, with this I'm starting my new Fanfic Undertale AU, wherein Frisk merged with Asriel's Soul instead of the Fallen Human's, and everything that would entail /j
You had been scouring the mountainside all day, scaling its rough and rock surface, past bush and tree, ascending higher and higher. Was it for fun? A dare? Or had you been trying to reach someplace? It didn’t matter. One misplaced step, and the ground crumbled beneath your feet like a pitfall, sending you tumbling down and down, deep into its hidden depths…
When you came to, you found yourself lying in a bed of soft yellow flowers, which much have broken your fall. Thank you flowers. Slowly standing up, being careful not to stumble due to your dizziness, you stared up at the hole you'd fallen through. It was way too high up to reach, even if it wasn't situated in the middle of this large cavern. Where were you anyways? With no other way out, you began to explore, searching for a way out, until eventually… you found it. A large rectangular gateway carved into the stone. How odd. Had people lived down here at some point? Did they still live down here? In either case, it seemed pretty obvious this could lead to safety. Because where there was civilization, there was a path back to the surface. Emboldened, you set off, not noticing the pollen of the flowers seeping into your skin and clothes, nor the itching of your body reacting to it, just absentmindedly scratching at the back of your neck before starting your adventure.
Passing through the gateway, it was like you'd stepped into another world, corridors lined with purple brick stretching out before you, their surface cracked and covered in vines. Torches cast a dim glow over the entire area, still lit despite it being who knows how long since someone other than you had been here. It seemed a bit ominous, but how else were you supposed to get out? And besides, murderers and monsters lurking in mysterious structures was just a thing of fiction… probably. You pressed onwards, slightly on edge. But as you passed through hallway after hallway, corridor after corridor, abandoned room after abandoned room, it quickly became apparent you were all alone. This place had long since been abandoned. Torn and rotting banners lay slumped against the walls, a cracked fountain that had long since dried up. It truly made you wonder what happened here. Where had all the people gone?
You slowly wandered the halls, not noticing your hair whitening, turning to fur, nor a small pair of horns slowly pushing out from your head. The collar of your shirt slowly began to change hues, turning a soft green. It was clear the pollen had, and was doing something to you, but you remained oblivious to this fact, continuing your walk even as beneath the shifting fabric, white fluff was starting to sprout up.
As you continued to explore the underground ruins of this mysterious society, your ears slowly began to lengthen, moving to the top of your skull as they became round and floppy, falling to either side of your head, closely resembling those of a goat's. The snowy white fur, concealed under the fabrics of your clothes, likewise continued to march its way down your arms and torso, creeping across your hands as they shrunk down into cute anthropomorphic paws.
On and on the stone corridors continued to stretch, barren besides patches of flourishing red flowers that seemed to be starting to crop up everywhere in spite of the lack of sun and water. Although… you did pass by that river back there. Perhaps they had aqueducts? Regardless, it gave you some hope as you continued your trek, passing by collapsed doorways and long since degraded traps, unaware of your face pushing out into a rounded snout as the fur finished coating every inch of your face. Coming to another bridge, you were especially careful to navigate around the rusted spikes. Getting Tetanus this far from civilization, well, a living civilization, would end poorly for you. Thankfully, you crossed with no unfortunate injuries. Why would you even have a bridge made of spikes? You just couldn't understand the designers of this place.
Your shirt had completely changed by this point, transformed into a green and yellow striped sweater, every inch of your body underneath coated in that soft white fur, as the changes began to descend even further, a short fluffy goat tail now poking its way out from beneath your sweater.
The rough cracked and rubble strewn floor slowly became unnoticeable as you adjusted to the feel of it. Or perhaps it was due to your feet squishing down into cushioned paws that were designed for navigating such terrain? You were starting to get a bit concerned though. You'd been walking for ages, but it felt like you were no closer to an exit. Have you been going in circles? Were you going to be trapped here forever?! Maybe you should've just stayed in that cavern and waited. Duh… number one rule when you find yourself lost… stay put so people can find you…
As you walked through another vine covered doorway, you finally caught a glimpse of someone kneeling down and watering the flowers. Dressed in a long purple gown, and… on closer inspection, clearly not human, from their large body, horns, and white fur. Against your better judgement, your body froze, as they eventually stood up, turning around as the two of you locked eyes.
“Asriel?! Is that you?!” She cried, running towards you.
“W-wait, who?” You questioned, stunned to hear your own voice come out so soft and… childish? It was then you noticed the muzzle in the corner of your vision, as well as your new fur covered body. Before you could, well, freak out at how your body had changed without you even noticing, the lady, Toriel? Was upon you, scooping you up into a hug
“I was so worried. I thought you were gone forever. I thought the humans had killed you! When you left, and never returned, we all assumed the worst. Thank the heavens you are safe. This is not a trick, is it? You are really here?”
Toriel hugged you tightly in her embrace as you gently hugged her back. You wanted to tell her you weren't her son but… your heart ached too much to bear telling her. So you held your tongue, just letting the hug go on.
“Y-yes mom, I'm here.” You murmured, as she slowly let you go, wiping her eyes, before gently taking you by the paw
“I had missed you so much… I have so many questions. Come, let us head home. I am sure you have missed seeing it after being away for so long.”
Before you could even get a word in, you were being led along through the winding corridors, past pillars, gardens, and a large tree, before arriving at the entrance to a small house, the well loved and maintained exterior a contrast to the otherwise degraded state of the rest of the area
“Come inside. There are so many memories to catch up on” Toriel would say, continuing to lead you as you entered the cream coloured interior of the home
She showed you around the house, cheerfully going on and on about every little detail, but under the smiles and warm atmosphere, you could feel it, under her breath, in every gentle movement as she touched an object from her past. She was lonely. You might have been the first person she'd spoken to in months. And she thought you were her son. Your heart ached even more. Until you finally arrived at a door labelled ‘guest bedroom’.
“I am sorry if it is not the same as when you left. I tried my best to keep it maintained but…”
“N-no! It's fine. It looks good!” You said, trying to cheer her up as you stepped inside, staring at all the little trinkets and drawings. You didn't recognize any of it, and yet, you felt a familial sense of nostalgia as you made your way over to the bedsheets, running a paw along the soft patterned fabric.
“Ah. Sorry dear. I had forgotten it has been a while for you too… I'll give you some time to yourself. If you need anything, I will be in the kitchen.” Toriel would say, giving you one last gentle hug, before leaving.
Now alone with your thoughts, you sat down on the bed, mind a torrent of questions and information. What were you going to do? You didn't know where you were, where to go, but most importantly, why you apparently now resembled this goat monster's child? What were you going to do? You couldn't just leave her like this, right? But you had your own family back home too…
Arg… you leaned back, collapsing onto the duvet, staring up at the pastel ceiling. Everything was just so… confusing. Nothing that came to mind as a solution seemed to work. It was like you were trapped at a crossroads. Do you keep pretending? Or tell her the truth and break her heart? She was all alone here.
So caught up in your own thoughts, you failed to notice just how tired you were, your body and mind worn out from your delving into the ruins. Your head grew heavy, your eyes lidden, before closing completely, as you were whisked away into a deep slumber.
You dreamed of a hill, two children sitting atop it, one human, the other… reminded you of your current body. They seemed happy, chatting amongst themselves, until the human took out something they'd been hiding behind their back. A small flower crown, which they rested on the goat's head. They seemed surprised, before giggling as the two hugged. They felt so familiar… Why couldn't you remember their names?
You were pulled from your sleep by a strange vision. A gate, not too dissimilar to the one you'd originally passed through, at the end of a long corridor. Sitting upright, you found you had been tucked into bed, a slice of Cinnamon-Butterscotch pie left on the dresser.
Before you had even fully awoken, you found your body moving down the hallway, almost on autopilot, approaching the stairs Toriel had explicitly left out explaining. Tip tap, tip tap. Your feet slowly and rhythmically padded against the wooden steps as you descended down, the warmth of the cottage slowly giving away to cold hard stone and deep purple hues, illuminated only by the torches spaced out across the walls. You slowly made your way through, a shiver running up your spine.
And then you saw it, the gate. Exactly how it had looked in your dream. It called to you as you approached, slowly getting closer and closer, until you could reach out and touch it.
“Asriel? What are you doing? Why are you down here?”
You turned around to see Toriel down the corridor, clearly shocked at what she saw, hurrying over to you.
“No, you don't understand, I need to-”
“I-I can't stay here. I'm not…-”
Before you could say any more, Toriel put her paw on your shoulder, clearly holding back tears.
“I… I understand. You're a big boy now. You can fend for yourself. Your father… was never the same after you vanished. What he did to the humans to fell down… perhaps if he sees you, he will finally snap out of it. I'm sure you remember the path back to our home. Just… be careful, Asriel. I don't want to lose you again” Toriel said, pulling you into another hug. It felt like she would never let go. You could sense her worry. Worry for you. You tried your best to comfort her
“I-I'll be fine. You can trust me. I won't vanish again” you said, trying to hide your own concern as you returned her hug, until finally, she let go, and stepped away to let you pass.
“Be safe dear. I know you'll be but… be safe.”
The large stone gate slowly opened, unveiling a winter Wonderland before you, snowflakes falling down in spite of it being Spring.
You had so many questions. Where were you, who were these people? Who was Asriel, and why had they gone missing? This whole other world, hidden underground, hid the answers you sought, and you were DETERMINED to find them. You took your first steps through the gate, feeling the snow crunching against your paws, as you began your new adventure.

Ooo man that's lovely. Full of intrigue and adventure. Makes me want to see that adventure unfold even though this is just an Octransfur prompt and the adventure would largely just be another flavor of Undertale. You have written it in such a way it feels like there is more ahead. Bravo.
To be fair, Undertale is about a complete stranger, a human child even, arriving in a world of monsters that have grown to see humans as the enemy and a threat to all they know.
This 'AU' flips it on the head by having you inherit Asriel's soul instead, taking on their identity (it's not as noticeable in the main game cause you and the fallen human are both humans but...), and thus, many interactions change, because everyone knows or has heard of the Prince of Monsters.
There is a lot of events that would change as a result of you no longer being the one hunted, and it being the Fallen Human, not Asriel, who exists without a soul. Remember, Asriel was a kind-hearted individual, and yet became Flowey. The Fallen human wanted to murder all of humanity and was only held back BY Asriel. So with them taking Flowey's place... well, maybe there's a reason why you didn't see any monsters in the Ruins this time around..
And I wonder how Asgore would react to discovering you're actually a human wearing the guise of his son? What would happen then? How would Asriel in your body react to seeing how far he had fallen, murdering innocent humans to obtain their souls for revenge? Etc.
Don't underestimate the potential of just a single swap. Most AUs get too ambitious in premise while not focusing on the actual effects of those changes. I'm the kind of person to turn the flap of a butterfly into a typhoon. It's just how I GM.
But also, I got too much on my plate to actually turn this into a full story, so... sorry ^^". It'll only exist as one of my many mental worlds sadly.

ngl that's a really good point! AUs tend to have such an issue with all these massive changes that end up with all the beats overall being the same as before.
Though Chara being flowey is still a weird thing, since the whole reason the flower-thing worked out was due to the magic-dust from a boss monster (Asriel). There'd defo be a tonnnn of differences regardless, maybe still with a pathway to escape the underground.

I didn't mean Chara would become Flowey. But instead take up their role. Flowey came from the Determination experiments. The Fallen Human is a source of determination.
So perhaps something happens during those secret experiments that causes Chara to reawaken. They can't see or hear, but they feel pain. Familiar pain, and they want it to stop. So they lash out.
I don't know what they'd become, but they'd never make it out of the True Lab, so whatever it is would be whatever they find in there. Perhaps they possess the machinery, or take over one of the dying monsters. I'm not sure. But they'd be the reason the True Lab was sealed off in this AU. They tried to keep them sealed away where nobody could find them, where nobody could be hurt by them. But somehow, they get out.
And of course, being 'Asriel', those in the know might believe you're the only one capable of stopping them.

I LOOOVE this twist on the tale, because the soul melding aspect of Undertale is simply never explored, at least in the game proper.
Frisk gets the short end of the stick there, with their only two bits of characterization ever being the description of their starting item and their behavior in the Pacifist's true ending cutscene, free from the player's input (though, even then, you get to decide whether they end up living with Toriel or wandering the world in the first place...).
Chara has much more spotlight as the narrator, but even so you don't learn about their instrumental part in the soul trio without a Genocide run. Their presence lingers over the entire game, especially a post-Genocide playthrough, like a ghost (eh!) but isn't ever known or commented about without the context of that Genocide ending.
And to be clear, that's not a knock against the game, because it never set out to explore this aspect in particular ; how it ended up using it is as good as it could have gotten without writing a fundamentally different narrative - that's what Deltarune is clearly for !
But that's why I like this take of yours so much.
Becoming an avatar of Asriel, presenting as him to the world ? Now, even with a human soul inside, that's going to change EVERYTHING about the journey. Lots of doors will open, some will close.
It also gives more room for the soul's lingering thoughts, feelings and memories to influence the vessel.
In Undertale, Chara's influence is... basically inexistent. Not only does the player not know about them, and thus attributes the narration to just Toby Fox himself, rather than the experiences of an in-game character, but ultimately who Chara becomes through it is entirely shaped by the player's actions.
But here ? In this context where you're not only mistaken for someone else, but also need to play their part… of course you're going to been keenly aware of this other presence within you - and intently listen to it for answers regarding its past and relationship to the people you meet.
Is it right for you to pretend to be Asriel to get what you want ? In any other circumstances it wouldn't be, but aren't you the closest thing to a second chance he'll ever get ? And it's not like you're completely unrelated to him either - not anymore…
At which point does genuine feelings start seeping into the farce ? Can you bring Asriel and his entourage closure, or perhaps even more ? When your journey ends, who will you choose to be ?
So many possibilities… Hey, you wouldn't consider making this an entire fic, would you ? :P

Haha. That's almost exactly my thoughts word for word. Glad you loved it too.
Sadly? I'm not the best at long form content due to IRL stuff. I just don't think I'd have time to add to the story.
To add some insult to injury I do have up to Hotland written out in my mind. Just not enough time to put it to paper...
