The prompt for today was "remote"
In Mirrorworld, there exists a species of pure mana -- runestones that manifest consciousness and adorn a physical form.
The Orycals are, as their namesake suggests, beings that prefer to live within the shadows, observing the world and keeping obsessive record over all knowledge within it. Tribes of Orycals tend to congregate around the most remote mana-rich environments, particularly places where even the most curious of explorers would be hard-pressed to find. Here we observe one such Orycal, perched over his tribe, deep within a cave whose air is so thick with mana, it's almost suffocating to non-magic-users.
Judging by this one's expression, it seems an uninvited guest (Stormy, most likely) stumbled her way into their den
I was doing pretty good with this until I wanted to try shading around some of his edges and add cast shadows. Then it got messy, and would be too much of a pain to fix at this point. Something that will be corrected if I finalize this piece for the next phase
On the other hand, I also ran out of time for my hour before I could add the feathers for his wings, so I ended up just scribbling in some loops as placeholders. Something that will require more time if I decide to move this one to phase 2
Though I'm not personally a fan of "closed species" , I would personally prefer if the Orycals stay exclusive to the story I'm writing
That being said, it doesn't REALLY matter as long as my only drawings of them are these crappy/messy half-finished doodles (that being said, even with it being such a mess (all thanks to the sloppy "finishing shading" I tried to add, it still feels like a substantial boost in quality. I have basically zero practice with ferals, so I didn't get a substantial boost like my anthro art, but I did get better nonetheless. I'm going to post an old 2018 doodle I made as my first "concept art" of what an orycal is. Keep in mind, this is about as old as the original Stormy drawing I recently redid
I'm personally not interested in ferals that much, and especially not in any NSFW for them, so if I ever learn to draw them, it will be for SFW purposes only. That being said, I do think it's useful to at least get a better set of foundational practice for drawing them, and have a couple artists in mind to study from next time I'm inspired to study. In the meantime, inktober is my current focus. Still trying to get an hour long sketh session every day to get more efficient

Yeah, very unhappy with how my attempt to "shade" ruined it in my eyes.
I want to do this species justice, so I might manually select this one for phase 2
In the meantime, I am now officially done with all the inktober sketches that I planned thumbnails for before the month started. So all remaining prompts are gonna end up being a "winging it" approach. I'm concerned composition may be weaker, especially since there are more landscape/environmental ones coming up this month. At the very least, I'm going to be trying to stick to my one hour soft-limit per day

All things considered, all these sketches are showing me I’m overdue for more anatomy studies
And perspective, but my anatomy is consistently off in ways that draw my attention more than wonky perspective (mostly)
I do still like that inktober is an excuse to practice composition. I think that was my weakest point at the start of the month, and having a baseline for adding scenes/backgrounds, even if simple, gives me the opportunity to actually do full renders and get more thorough practice on *everything*
