Know Your Eternal Engines!
[Query:]
What are you?
[Answer:]
A Blueprint. A Gateway. A Solution.
[Query:]

[Answer:]
A Greater Foundation.
- The North Corridor, Query 42-A

“The Organic Form is a guest of Their invention.
We have offended by attempting to turn ourselves into the host.
What will happen to our kind is not now known,
But doubtless the Eternal Engines will prove equal to the situation,
By devising methods of control at once both unobjectionable and effective.”
- Tenets of the Panic Broadcast Respondents' Republic [Cult of Aberration]
-
“...And then came the blizzard rising,
High above the mountains; blinding.
Cold and dark and ever-rending,
The fire we lit, we felt it dying.”
But this wasn’t to be our ending,
We faced the cold, we’d go out fighting.
Hand in hand, the wind was screaming,
That’s the story I keep on dreaming.”
- Alexyn Heith, Primeval Dreams.

Have a in-universe Grayline info poster about Eternal Engines. Since they are formless, nameless eldritch gods, mortals have taken it upon themselves to name and categorize them, primarily by using the ring-rune that acts as their callsign, their true identity. Whether ring-runes are their actual name or something else entirely is unknown, but it's all organic life has to go off of, so it's what they use. Oh, and always remember:
Black = Has your Back.
Blue = Doesn't Care about You.
Red = You're Probably Dead.

Actually the reason for this is pretty close to what you guessed. In some cases, a more powerful engine like Assimilation will create, then abandon a world, and another Engine will then take over. In the example of Assimilation, he created Empyrean, however it was the Engine Leis who brought life to it and created the Empyrean Consorts. Since the world was still forged by Assimilation, they beat his rune instead.
It's actually a bit of lore I'm considering changing because it may overcomplicate things. We will see!
