Yup, the name fireplug comes from the early days of municipal water systems. The pipes in the city were actually made out of wood by taking a hewn tree, hollowing it out, and fitting them together to make pipe. When there was a fire, the firemen would dig to a section of pipe, knock a hole in it, and pump water from it. When they were done, they would place a large plug in it to seal the pipe back up. They would note where the plug was, so if they had another fire close by, they could just "pull the plug" again instead of making a new hole.

Learning stuff is cool.

Years ago I was a Vol Fireman / EMT. One of or neighboring stations had a kind of museum of stuff. They had a section of old wood pipe that used to be in town on display with a "Fire Plug" in it that got saved when the pipes were replaced.

Very cool. I've seen a wood pipe chunk before. There's one on display as part of the Seattle underground tour. But the parts about drilling into them for a fire and plugging them up again is all new to me. :)
