The land of Hisui then was a lot more 'primitive' and vastly different than the present-day Sinnoh region. The ease and comfortable nature of technological and scientific advances did not exist in such a way in the relatively distant past. Hisui was naturally full of mistrust and wary, apprehensive natures about your neighbors, and friendships were not often obtained. As such, especially in Alabaster Icelands, it was a 'kill or be killed' sort of mentality. This especially applied to the dominant Samurott clan, Clan Hisu.

Not many would actually think to fight Clan Hisu, but Merizi's group, the Ochi Sect, did. Not head-on mind you, but in the shadows and using the art of lethal poisoning and thievery to harass and pick at Clan Hisu. When it came to the art of mixing deadly poisons and various lethal concoctions, Merizi was one of the best in her sect, easily incapacitating and even slaying several of Clan Hisu's trainees and warriors alike. This continued use of hit-and-run tactics eventually caused and provoked Rezilo Hisu himself to slay the matriarch of the Ochi Sect, something that Merizi vowed to repay in full one day. However, when Rezilo Hisu suddenly went missing without a single trace in the world, plans of revenge and retribution turned to curiosity and wonder as to what occurred when a space-time distortion appeared over Alabaster Icelands one day...
