Sort of the beginning of an experiment what I dabble in every so often- I needed to get it out, so here it is, the first part of something that you might never see again- so don't get too attached.

Those who bother to listen to my rambling (in person, mostly) know that one of the things I wish to someday achieve is a graphic novel in which we see things as the character sees them, mishear things that s/he mishears and recover from mistakes with them.
This is not that, but is a short foray into a similar set of ideas- learning, discovery, difficulty with perception and understanding.
This man does not have amnesia, in as many words, but he's probably older than 50. He's had a concussion or three in his lifetime and has very recently lost a lot of blood. he's probably undergone a major surgery at least once.

He already has an issue with not seeing things correctly; it developed after his most recent surgery, but the two things are not as related as the timeline might lead you to believe; and he may have lost someone very dear to him- in all honestly he does not know.
