The rancher caught the culprit red-handed, but with that ghastly form, evil glowing eyes, and mysterious pendant, perhaps such a loss might not have been all that bad.

Actually I raised chicken for a long time and didn't have that problem. But my chickens were pretty smart and well trained to putting themselves up in their coup at night. The only real wildlife issue I had was a weasel that started stealing eggs.
Ducks would just lay in a giant accessible pile on the open ground in spite of having accessible shelter. Much to the delight of owls and foxes.
