Tanathe was awesome and put together a break down of the piece, with a great reference for how it will come out. Check it out here! http://tanathe.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d3hxmwo

Well... After a very...very long time, the design is finally finished - at least to a point, cause the commissioner might still want to change a few bits.
Anyway!
Poetry to design.
The tattoo is based on on Grímnismál - one of the poems from Poetic Edda, which together with Prose Edda are the most important sources of our knowledge about Norse mythology and Germanic legends.
If you have any problems with identifying the symbols:
* Yggdrasil - "noblest of trees" - a immense holy ash tree that connects all the nine worlds of the Norse mythology.
* Huginn and Muninn - in old norse "thought" and "memory". Two ravens flying around the world and bringing news to their master Odin.
* Dáinn, Dvalinn, Duneyrr and Duraþrór - four stags (or harts) living in the treetop of Yggdrasil and gnawing on its branches. Their symbolic meaning is still unknown due to trouble with translating the original source but it's said they might be connected with the four elements, the four seasons or the phases of the moon.
* Eagle and hawk Veðrfölnir - in the poem, the hawk is sitting between the eyes of the eagle. The two are an inseparable pair where hawk represents the power and eagle the wisdom.
* Ratatosk - a squirrel messenger that runs up and down Yggdrasil to tell slanderous gossip and envious words, provoking the eagle and Nidhogg.
* Hati and Sköll - sons of Fenrir Hróðvitnir. The two chase respectively chariots containing the sun and the moon. Ragnarök, both Sköll and Hati will succeed in their quests.
* Fenrir - a monstrous wolf, one of the children of the giant Loki, foretold to kill the god Odin during the Ragnarök. Till then he's bound with a mythical rope Gleipnir on a an island Lyngvi (a place overgrown with heather).
* Gleipnir - a rope or a chain created by dwarves for the very purpose of capturing Fenrir. It was made of the sound of a cat's footfall, the beard of a woman, the roots of a mountain, the sinews of a bear, the breath of a fish and the spittle of a bird.
* Níðhöggr - a serpent, wyrm, dragon that lives under the Yggdrasil and gnaws on its roots.
* Mjǫlnir - in this tattoo hidden in the general shape of the design - hammer of the thunder god Thor. The most powerful weapon in the world capable of leveling mountains.
Phew...
Hope you like it!
And please guys, don't use it - the design was made exclusively and with precise measurements for the commissioner who waited for it really long... so no touchies! :meow:

Damn, that triggered allot of viking stuff in my head. Utterly delicious and spectacular design! I can definitely image myself with this on, but in a small version.
Think I would like to see the "gems" green though, neongreen, due to the lovely contrast black and green have together :)
Utterly masterful!

Heh, Its been a project in the works for a while now, something I've wanted for years and years and years. There are many like it, sure, with varied designs and symbols and their meanings but this one is just... all too perfect for me. Its everything I've ever wanted. Christmas AND my birthday. XD
Please, give regards to Tanathe as well. She is epically deserving of all praise.

This has to be one of the most amazing tattoos I've ever seen, but what really stuns me about it is I had a dream about a falcon (what I thought was a falcon) and an eagle when I was very young and performed my familiar ritual... I had no idea they were actually connected in mythology in some way.
Shocking o_o Stunning!

Ah... that is a good question. Really - I just knew it. Word of mouth, people giving her a great recommendation, etc. This was back, way back, before I think I even talked to you XD. So its been a while :P
And yeah, I found a phenomenal artist. He is peerless in his mastery: http://www.daweitattoo.com/
Ive put a lot of time and thought into this, because its forever - afterall right? XD

Its been a while since I've seen a tattoo that made me gape at it for quite a few minutes. This is amazing. Seriously. I love tattoos like this, and the spiritual meanings behind them. I am with out words. Humbled to say the least.
I'm been debating quite some time about getting Sköll and Hati tattooed on my chest after my mastectomy (birth deformity ftft). Least I have a while to commission and figure out my own design.

I'm not usually a fan of tribal-style tattoos, but this is just absolutely stunning! <3 I'm a huge fan of Norse mythology and the sagas (being part of a viking reenactment group has only solidified my love for them haha), the stories are all so inspiring.
Seriously beautiful design!
