Back in May, my father and I went to a steam railway gala at the West Somerset Railway, a heritage steam railway in - you guessed it - West Somerset! It's actually the longest heritage line in Britain, at over 20 miles long running from Bishop's Lydeard (nr Taunton, the county town of Somerset) to the coastal town of Minehead.
I'm quite sure that Britain isn't unique in this, but I think that there's something in our national character that yearns both for progress and the promise of the future, and for tradition and the stability of the past. Sometimes, these two yearnings clash, and sometimes they can co-exist peacefully. Take this scene of a steam engine on approach to Williton station. A steam engine built some 74 years ago enters a station that was first opened 182 years ago, and in so doing glides past a house proudly fitted with solar panels, double-glazed windows, and wireless internet.
Hope you enjoy!
