So tonight's Inktober finally went over schedule - There are four Red Sonja pictures from ancient times - one elaborate inking, the main offering, that didn't get finished it time, and three silly pictures.
It's a few minutes after my Midnight deadline and i'm still working on the main picture, so i'm starting off with one of the silly pictures instead. From December '81.

i was a fan of Robert E. Howard in my teens - and, while i sort of like those movies, they fall so short of what his stories were like. Same with Edgar Rice Burroughs - "Greystoke" was the closest there is to a good Tarzan movie and it falls far short of the books ... like "John Carter". There's too much cocaine in Hollywood and not enough brain cells.
Well TBH those movies were never gonna do justice to the comcis / books / novels... They simply can't. But they were good fun for what they were. And to be totally honest, neither Schwarzenegger nor Nielsen are great actors :P ...
The good adaptations never find enough traction to really take of...

I try to see movies / series and books / comics separate from one another, since if I read a book before seeing the adaptation, I already have an image for what I imagine the characters and locations to look and act like, and then the movie embodies someone elses idea... that almost never fits... it can't... and if it fits for me, it won't for someone else...
There are only some that are able to come close to what I would consider a good adaptation within the limits of adaptations with "real" actors.
Dredd was a good on, even if it still falls short, but well budget constrains and the need to appeal to at least some sort of a wider audience kept it short of being great (which it is as an dystopian action movie)
I found Nausicäa of the valley of the winds to be an admireable adaptation of the theme the manga later elaborated to... a series would have worked better as the story is that much more grander than the one comparedly short movie can show and emcompass...
And maybe the Tim Burton version of Batman, as for all its flaws, it portrays the characters somewhat good in my oppinion, and Nicolson is just a great actor...

i adored Barry Smith's original version of Red Sonja (Rita Hayworth in a chain mail shirt and leather shorts) - and then at some point Marvel (via Estaban Morato) put her into this utterly ridiculous costume (sales probably rose along with other things) - so any picture of her in this silly 'armor' was likely to turn sillier ( "moar silly", "silacious" ?) At first i liked Frank Thorne's art on her title comic cuz i thot it looked a bit like Joe Kubert simplified, but then i began to see he was being lazy and just mailing it in. i did try to do a few 'serious' pictures of her such as 'farewell' and another for next Inktober ... partially cuz i was thinking of working for Marvel, but ... you can only manage suspension of disbelief for so long. As i mentioned in a reply to the 'Twisted Sonja' pic i had also gotten into Egon Schiele at this time ....
oh, so the outfit is what makes it silly? But comic book outfits almost always look silly in one way or another, and often in multiple ways! Honestly, I actually prefer it that way. And yes I admit I also prefer Red Sonja's ridiculous bikini armour to her mail-shirt & shorts outfit
