Year six of doing a November 1st self portrait.
After last year's self portrait experience of trying to do something specific and ultimately giving up on that plan after several failures, then doing something completely off the cuff and having more fun doing that, I decided to go that route again this year. No real plan, just kinda painting and seeing what happens. The only real direction I had for myself was taking inspiration from Yuming Li (@_Yuming_Li on twitter) and trying to emulate they way they use color. Lots of things did not go as well as I would have liked, but I'm not unhappy with it and it was a joy to take a crack at it.
Enjoy!

Holy hecc.
An artist I am not, but the sheer amount of contrast in this —the light, the shadow, the sharp transitions alongside the gentle gradients— are phenomenal!
My favorite of your self portraits had been the 2020 one (for complicated reasons), but you've really gone out & done something different but wonderful here. This is a gorgeous piece.

Fantastic work on this years portrait Jay, always such impressive artistry! The way the strokes have a wispy feel and the lack of very distinctive features gives this a sort of melancholic or depressed feel. (Reading through the comments before I posted this it seems i'm not alone!) It almost gives off a dream like appearance with the light like that too.
Happy to be able to see this after last years, and look forward to next years!
