Fun fact: My decision to have Zaer appearing in the epilogue to criticize Gervic is inspired by a reader on e621 that got really pissed that Gervic got turn into Vlagg's whore (that's basically how the reader puts it - Don't worry e621 reader, no hard feelings here).
Just as well I suppose since my original plan for the ending is a bit more darker than this.

I'm sorry, Zaer, but Gervic is no longer the wolf you knew. I'm sorry you won't be together anymore, but please accept your friend's choice.
As for Gerv being Vlagg's whore, that's not entirely true. Yes, they had sex, but the wolf didn't trust the young lord at first, because he could be like Bob, for whom Gervic was a whore. It was in the future that the two of them became close, becoming a couple. So I disagree with the commenter on e621.

I think we have to also realise he’s “the last one left” he watched all his Allie’s die due to bobs experimenting, and even gervic is a victim of Bobs twisted experiments .
There is an extent of survivor guilt here, he can’t save gervic and in his eyes. He blames himself for how gervic ended up .
And even if it’s not justified, he dose blame vlagg because even if he didn’t want this he was still technicaly in charge . If vlagg didn’t invade there castle none of this would have happened.
I’ve been thinking of what happend ig c vlagg was instead captive in gervic castle. How the story would have changed

Bruh doesn’t realize it’s cause he changed cause the war changed
The torture the torment, the humiliation. He saw himself turn from a hero of war to a whore of war. And not his comrades that saved him but his own enemy
That’s why he’s changed not from or against you but for the better. It’s his way of moving forward

This does hit home a little bit ...
Of those (my parents mostly) who just refuse to accept that the person they knew before, the little boy they were raising, has grown and changed from his experiences ... Who has different opinions now ... different likes .... which no longer align with theirs ...

That's the thing, Zaer was probably in love with Gervic, and I think dreamed of bringing him back not only to his home, but to his place. And he witnessed Bob's violence. So why is he berating his friend for choosing to live with a dragon who loves his commander for real? Though perhaps the wolf is just hurt that his illusions have been shattered.
How else to explain Zaer's reprimanding of Gerv? Only that the commander was more than a friend to him. I may be trying to pull an owl on a globe, but I have no other explanation. Besides, Vlagg is not the kind of dragon who would humiliate his opponent. He genuinely cared for Gervic after rescuing the wolf from captivity and the hell that Gervic had fallen into because of a revenge-crazed Bob, and tried to help him live in the castle. He never once humiliated his former enemy, but managed to become his friend, then lover, and finally husband. And Zaer is pissed off about it. I wonder where that wolf has been for two years.
He probably thought about how he, like a real knight, would save Gervic from an evil dragon, just as if he were a princess from that tower))))) But seriously, who knows. And,get into the castle that is clogged with enemy forces, not knowing WHERE EXACTLY your target is,not a simple task at all ...
Well, it's too late to do anything now, because time cannot go back, so Zaer must respect the feelings of a friend. After all, Gerv is happy with her husband, he is not someone who does anything on orders. Yes, I can understand Zaer, but his actions, like those of Zudrek, cause me two feelings: pity and disgust at the same time.
honestly its not that straightforawrd as zaer is blind .
its more he suffered endured and watched people die around him and for what, to see his former commander turned into this ....well person.
I feel like zaer is less mad at gervic and more mad that after everything he’s undergone and suffered at the hands of bob he can’t even say he rescued his captain from a fate that he deems worse than death .
So…I dunno , maybe if Vlagg made some kind of apology it could help soften the blow? He did allow bob full control of the castle while he was recovering .

Tbh, there's no guarantee the empire will take Gervic back for his chimera and the dragons take responsibility for their prisoner's treatment and will wailing about Bob's death more than Gervic. Just let that man and Vlagg be. War trauma is real and can't believe it's still happening until this day
