Hades "the Unseen" Fox Origin Story (Remastered)
*Note: This is a remastered origin story of my fursona and book mascot, Hades the Frisktonian Fox.
Frisktonia was a peaceful planet of small, bipedal critters. These primitive creatures roam the unspoiled, forested glades where they would climb, leap, and cuddle to their heart’s content. When Hades was born, his parents did not have a proper name for him, like most of the Frisktonians who remained nameless and recognized each other by looks. He was a lilac-purple vulpine with white paws and gleaming emerald-green eyes, a color that was common among the critters. As a fox, he was often called "Foxy" by many and took up the name as his own. He lived in the treehouses amidst the canopies, concealed by the leaves and inconspicuous from the forest floors.
Many Frisktonians knew where he lived and would clamber up his tree to visit him every day. He would hop down from his home to play with them, capering freely with the winds blowing against their snouts, ears, and fluffy bodies. In other critters’ eyes, he was a very energetic and lively fox, brimming with more energy than the typical vulpines in their little community. Without anything to worry about, he often sprawled frivolously on the branches around his treehouse during the days and nights, lazing about to bask under the sunlight and stars.
However, while Foxy lived out his Frisktonian life peacefully for years, he was oblivious that everything was about to be turned upside-down. Several spaceships descended stealthily upon the world, their many occupants arriving uninvited and equipped with advanced technology not available to the inhabitants. Without much warning, they snatched up many of the critters in the night and took them away to their ship, some even waiting to capture more on their second night there. To Frisktonians who escaped to tell the tale, they were known as the Poachers, kidnapping them to be sold in the Intergalactic Black Market the next morning. Eventually, they found their way into Foxy’s treehouse on the third night.
“And, so begins the mighty legend of the Unseen One…”
“Hey… I’m the one narrating here! We’re not even at that part yet!”
“My bad…”
One of the Poachers stumbled across the treehouse late in the night, equipped with a laser net gun in hand. Awaken by the creaking of the wood under the Poacher’s weight, Foxy’s eyes popped wide open. As their sights met, Hades immediately scampered away, unfortunately still in the Poacher's reach. With the pull of the trigger, a laser net flung over his back, collapsing onto him in an instant. As the Poacher retrieved him in the net, his endeavors to struggle out of his trap was futile. “Don’t worry, little fella. You’ll meet your new owners soon. Heh heh,” the Poacher revealed with a chuckle. “And there’s no use. These nets are imperial-grade, almost impossible to break out unless you’ve got a titanium cutter.”
With a defeated sigh, Foxy was taken aboard a spaceship and transferred into a titanium cage, one of the many his other friends were held captive. All around him, he could hear high-pitched cries of Frisktonians, beeping sounds of glowing holographic panels, and droning sounds of machinery. Tears were shed by many, some even accepted their fate, hugging each other in the cages containing more than one critter. While he was sitting about with a frown, he eavesdropped on a conversation between the Poachers, realizing what the Poacher who caught him meant by “owners.”
“These fellas make for exotic pets, Captain Callen. We're gonna to make a fortune selling these guys!”
“The dealers love them and they’re so easy to catch. That’s why we’re here for quick money.”
One even mentioned that Frisktonians were put on leashes to keep them from flying or running away, their feeble attempts to reclaim freedom appearing adorable to all the people of different planets. They were fed pet kibble, sounding more revolting to Foxy than the fruits and berries they would frequently indulge in on Frisktonia. He pondered about it for a moment. “Captured to become pets? That’s just so demeaning to us… This can’t stand!” He rattled the bars of his cage to protest, but all the Poachers could hear were a series of shrills and yelps emitted from his snout.
The captain of the Poachers approached his cage and glared at him for a few agonizing seconds, causing him to be unnerved and retreat to a corner of the cage. “Hmph! That’s what I thought. This one's feisty guy. With ya so active, you’d sell fast on the Intergalactic Black Market.” The Poachers guffawed as they exited the room, switching off the lights in the room where he was and drowning them in darkness. He waited and waited as the minutes ticked by. There was only silence in the inky blackness, not even a whimper from the other Frisktonians who had relinquished their freedom.
Foxy began trying to pick the lock of his cage with his claws, poking a digit into the keyhole meticulously. After some persistent twisting and turning, he successfully picked the lock and sprinted straight towards the door and opened it to let light seep in. However, guilt soon filled his mind as he turned back at the dispirited, glinting eyes in the dark. Dipping his head, he muttered to himself, “I promised I’ll come back to free all of you…” As he made a break from the spaceship, he instinctively returned to his treehouse.
Unfortunately, by the time he reached his tree, all he could see were broken branches and parts of his treehouse strewn at the base of the tree. He shifted his sights upward and was devastated. No one was up there anymore. His little Frisktonian neighborhood was a wreck, abandoned and lifeless in the night. He climbed up to the branch where the treehouse used to be and slumped against the bark of the tree. With his home, parents and friends taken away from him, he was at rock-bottom. His eyes welled up with tears as he began weeping, burying his face in his paws that soaked up in his tears on every sniffle.
“You seek justice for your friends and family, but you feel powerless to do so, am I right?” A voice reverberated through the canopies. Foxy glanced around, unsure whether it was the thoughts in his mind or someone else. He answered hesitantly, “I do. But whoever you are, show yourself!”
The tree abruptly lit up with an instantaneous flare, temporarily blinding him as he squinted to see who it was. Floating beside the branch he was leaning on was a levitating spirit with a golden aura surrounding her. “I’m Empyrea, the spirit of the Empyrean Comet that passes Frisktonia every five years. I shall grant you the magical ability of shapeshifting to deal with the poachers. With this power, you can transform into anyone or anything, feel and think like they do and access their deepest memories and thoughts. If they have unique abilities, you can use them just as efficiently as they do.”
The spirit closed her eyes and pressed a paw on Foxy's chest, sending a pulse of energy into his body, disseminating warm tingles through his body as his body glowed momentarily. To test his new powers, he tried transforming into Empyrea but failed instantly, doubting that he had gained the aforementioned powers. "You shouldn't try transforming into me. I can limit the extent of the powers that I give, preventing any of my secrets from being known. Try transforming into someone else, like one of the poachers."
He imagined the face of Captain Callen and transformed into him, giving him access to all his memories and every Frisktonian he had captured that night. Empyrea nodded after sensing that he could utilize his shapeshifting abilities fully, knowing that her part was done. “Remember, use your powers wisely and rescue your friends. Live selflessly and you shall find true joy.” With her last statement, she disappeared in another flash, leaving Foxy with his new abilities to begin the rescue.
“And that’s how I got my powers! Shapeshifting abilities are the best for fickle-minded souls like me! I can become anything I want, except Empyrea…”
“Ahem! Please let me continue!”
Foxy reverted to his original form and dashed to the ship that, entering the dark room he had just escaped from stealthily. He shapeshifted into Captain Callen and unveiled a hidden box of labeled keys, turning back to his original form in case the face of the enemy scared them. One by one, he hastily unlocked the cages until all his Frisktonian friends in the room had escaped. As the last one in his room, he wiped his sweat with his paws as he stared at the collection of open cages. However, when he turned around to depart, he was shocked to see the Poachers, including the captain, standing before him with anger dashed across their faces.
“Ye nasty purple fox! Ya let everyone escape, didn't ya? Well, ye ain’t runnin’ now!”
He was quickly recaptured by the captain into a laser net and taken into his quarters. Captain Callen stared at Foxy from his seat with an intense, relentless gaze, causing him to shudder in fear as his pointy ears drooped backward. What was he going to do now? He remembered that he could shapeshift and sneak away, but he needed a window of opportunity to do so. In another quick swipe, he was recaptured and placed in the captain's room, watched closely by Captain Callen himself. He was being stared upon relentlessly by the eyes of the captain, so close that he could feel the warmth of his heavy breaths. Foxy's ears drooped down in fear as the intense unending gaze unnerved him.
What was he going to do? He thought and realized he could shapeshift away, but he needed a window of opportunity. As soon as the captain dozed off watching him, he transformed into an ant and crawled out of the net before turning back. He skulked his way out of the captain’s room, but to his chagrin, he knocked off one of the many gizmos on his table. The device bounced, creating a cacophony of clanging sounds and alerting Captain Callen that Foxy had escaped once more.
“Ya sneaky fox! Come back here!” He demanded as he took to his heels to pursue Foxy through the corridors, eventually cornered in the control room. With the flick of a switch, the shallow-breathing captain activated the ship’s lockdown mode. “Now, you’re trapped! What'cha gonna do now?”
It was true. Foxy was stuck. All he could see were several gadgets that glowed in the darkness, which gave him an idea. He leaped up and transformed into one of the gadgets, blending in among the technology and hoped he could not be spotted. As time went by, the captain inspected each one, giving each a test and glossed over the shapeshifter. Soon, with frustration catching up to him after a fruitless few hours, he gave up and deactivated the lockdown mode, returning to his quarters with annoyed huffs.
While still camouflaged as a convincing device, one of the Poachers entered the control room and picked him up. Being prodded by the fingers of the poacher, he began giggling from the tickling sensations and transformed back. Foxy leaped above the Poacher’s head, somersaulting midair like an acrobat and landing at the entrance of the control room doors. “See ya!” He blurted out as he bolted toward freedom. He felt victorious and happy that he escaped with the other Frisktonians, remembering Empyrea’s words to be selfless. Feeling accomplished, he was ready to taunt the Poachers further to drive them away from Frisktonia, embracing bravery instead of hiding from plain sight like the rest of the Frisktonians.
Mustering his courage, he explored the other ships to liberate the other Frisktonians, transforming into random objects or crew members to blend in. Each time, he would succeed in breaking his kind out of the ships, often leaving the Poachers confused and exasperated. With every rescue, he sniffed out sweet treats and biscuits from the ships’ pantries, indulging them as a way of rewarding himself. As the sun rose, every critter captured from the night before was rescued, now hiding to elude the Poachers’ sights.
As the days passed, all of the Poachers knew about Foxy’s ability to shapeshift and mischief he caused on every break in. The Poachers placed a bounty on his head, setting up holograms with Foxy’s face on the outside of the ships, and wanted posters on the walls of the interior living spaces. Word soon spread to the purple vulpine, piquing his curiosity on the matter. He took a risk, stealthily infiltrating one of their ships during the day to retrieve one of the posters. Like before, he disguised himself as a Poacher and swiped a poster, rolling it up before taking it back to the rest in the temporary hideout.
Once he returned to the other Frisktonians, he unrolled the parchment, standing akimbo in pride as he presented his face on the wanted poster. It read, “Wanted: Hades, the Unseen One. To all Poachers, this purple Frisktonian can shapeshift and take any form. If caught, you’ll be handsomely rewarded. But be warned, his methods of deception are cunning, so take caution when he’s in your hands. P.S. Stop this elusive menace before he takes away our potential profits! And our sweet snacks!”
“Hmm, Hades the Unseen One, huh? I love that name,” he said to the hiding critters. With a decision made, he proclaimed that he was going to adopt the name ‘Hades,’ the infamous, unseen Frisktonian hider.
“And that’s where I got my name!”
“Isn’t Hades the name of the king of the underworld, apart from meaning unseen?”
“Well, if my name’s related to the underworld, it must be my devilish charms! Hee hee hee!”
“Ugh… Let’s just finish up this story, shall we?”
“Alright…”
Knowing that the Poachers would make a joint effort to locate him, Hades thought of a Frisktonian rebellion where all of them would cause chaos aboard their ships to drive them away. The purple fox had swiped and prepared all sorts of tools from small contraptions to paw-compatible weapons, passing out some gadgets that enabled the critters to stun the poachers. While only a handful of Frisktonians were provided with combat technology, majority of them built catapults and slingshots for long-distance attacks. And for close combat, they made wooden clubs and spears among various unique weapons, readying themselves for an all-out attack.
On the night of their invasion, the Frisktonians chased the Poachers with their miniature weapons, resulting in a sea of colorful fluffy creatures swarming through their ships and damaging them. Their efforts soon paid off, discouraging the Poachers from capturing them. Instead, the critters were chased out of the ships before they took off, zipping into the night skies. Only one ship remained on the grounds of Frisktonia - Captain Callen's ship. Like most captains, he retreated back to the ship, but little did they know the captain had one Frisktonians in his grasp. Fortunately, it wailed loudly enough to alert Hades that one of his fellow kin was still captured.
As the captain retreated up his ship’s ramp with his group of Poachers, Hades jumped onto the ramp, transforming into him to wrestle the critter out of his hands. In a matter of seconds, the captured Frisktonian was freed but the ramp was closing shut. Using his shapeshifted hands, he sent the critter flying out of the ship back to freedom, sacrificing his own means of escape as he continued fighting tooth and nail with the captain. Reverting to his original form, he landed a paw on Captain Callen’s cheek. Unaware that his paws were charged with magic, he instantly knocked the captain out, leaving the rest of the crew stunned on the spot. Taking this short window to flee, he sprinted around the ship’s corridors and hid in an unused storage room, eluding the sights of the Poachers and biding his time until the ship landed again.
His sacrifice led to his planet’s freedom, leaving the remaining Frisktonians saddened without the presence of the Unseen One. His little retaliation allowed the critters to now have methods of fending for themselves with improvised weaponry. Apart from being defenseless no more, they began the age of technological advancements with the gadgets Hades had once stolen. They broke the gadgets apart and pieced together complicated contraptions, some used to improve and rebuild Frisktonian communities while others utilized to create more gadgets. Hades had changed Frisktonia for the better, but he could not see it for himself.
Peering through a window next to him, he sighed in relief that the Frisktonian planet below him was peaceful once again. Leaning his back against the cold, metallic walls, Hades wondered where the ship was going to bring him - to paradise, or to a place of misery. But wherever he ended up, he hoped to find sweet treats. He anticipated a long journey and searched for a good spot to hide aboard the ship, stumbling upon a crate filled with foam peanuts to sneak into. As he hid inside, he fell asleep as the warm and squishy plastic marshmallows were too comfortable for him to stay awake. Unbeknownst to him, the Poachers were headed for Xenia, a massive celestial body in the middle of the Universe.
As the ship landed in a dimly-lit spacecraft hangar with a bump, he was startled awake from his deep slumber, leaping out of the crate and spilling the foam peanuts everywhere like snow. Seeing the light of day seeping through a doorway from the ramp of the ship, he sprinted as fast as his legs could go and exited the building he was in. Upon bursting through the doorways, his body was rocked by the sights and sounds of the sheer magnitude of the futuristic, metropolitan cityscape in his sight. Everywhere he glanced, there were flying vehicles and holograms. Being timid around strangers who were non-Frisktonian, he ran into a park and ducked down under a bush.
He was still curious to know which planet he was on, and he knew how to get that information. Using his Empyrean powers to shapeshift into the civilians wandering the streets, he acquired pieces of knowledge and memories from them. 'This is Xenia, the center for beings of all kinds and the safest place in the galaxy, what they call the Intergalactic Federation. The language the Poachers spoke was Xenian, meaning they originated from here. But…’ He yawned halfway through his thoughts, lethargic from repetitive shapeshifting over and over again into the Xenians to learn more about his whereabouts. ‘I really need to have my afternoon naps. Shapeshifting is exhausting….’
While strolling through the streets, Hades did not seem out of place to the eye of other Xenians despite being short. They only smiled back at him whenever he gazed in their direction, treating him as an adorable visitor. He entered a park named the Euphoric Verdures, clambering up a tree in the very center of the grassy expanse. With a stretch and another yawn, he fell asleep, laying back on the cool barks of the tree’s canopy.
“And, that was how I was found on Xenia and taken in as a member of the Empyreans.”
“Hey… You stole my line!”
“I’m sorry, narrating, disembodied voice, but this is my story anyway. Just hurry up with anything you have left to say.”
“Ugh… Well, your origin story has come to a close, Hades, and so is my time here.”
Books that Hades had a big role in:
1. (2016) Leo and the Legend of the Empyrean Prophecy (continuation of story)
2. (2018) Leo and the Mysteries of the Multiverse - The Delve for Hades (where he got his bandana and limitless powers)
(***Disclaimer: English quality would differ as those are the first novels I’ve ever published. I’m planning for a duology-series remaster in 2025 and 2026.)
