If you're not doing it pixel art style, one fun trick you can do with an airbrush is to set the blending mode of the airbrush to be Addition, and set the blending mode of the layer to be addition as well. Then set your color to be pretty dark. As you layer strokes, you'll get a natural light attenuation that you can pair with solid strokes to create a sense of shinier rubber or latex.
