Volatus is the first democratic nation in three hundred years of evolution of avian civilization. There were nomadic, tribal periods, feudalism, and a totalitarian monarchy, overthrown some fifty-five years before the events of Book One: Whiterock. The free society of Volatus was hard-won with many acts of risk and sacrifice, not just among warriors but also among those that thought "radically" and spread their ideas. Or those that moved the ideas, the supplies, and the equipment around the growing realm of free birds. And also those that raised their chicks in secret in order to avoid their conscription to fight for a nation that enslaved them.
"One beak, one vote, one nation"This slogan means that every bird has a part in determining the nation's destiny. They can do more, but at the very least, they have the right to vote for their leadership. Some take the responsibility more seriously than others by paying attention to the oracles and printed news (yes, Volatus has some printing presses). Others are less informed and more casual. But voter turnout is generally high. The dark times of oppressive rule, when birds did not have a choice, have not been forgotten.
I hope that you will exercise your right to vote, wherever you are. I hope that you do your due diligence and make an informed decision (not always easy in all jurisdictions). Exercise your right to choose and defend that right for others, even if you disagree with them. Ultimately it's us versus the forces of tyranny or complacence.
