While driving around at work the other day, I saw something that I just had to stop and check out.
I spoke with the owner who informed me this was actually a factory built rig. She stated that a company in Cali had made approx. 200 of them in the mid 60's.

The 1960s brought a bunch of odd campers. My dad bought a slide in made by Born Free made about 1965 it looked normal but had a set of axels off the back of the truck. That added an additional 6ft to the camper itself. We lived in it summer/fall of 1985. He got for 1000 since it had been rolled at one point. And in 2005 I actually got a brochure from the company and featured in it was a camper that a 16yrold boy rolled after dodging a herd of pronghorn on the plains. The photos of the damage matched the camper my dad has bought. The company was happy to hear it had been in use up until 1989 when my dad sold it to a friend.
This is a mint version of it;

There were posts that dropped into the corner holes in the bed of the truck and you could bolt the camper in place, it also had a bar under the truck to help stabilize it. The rear wheels did bear part of the camper weight as well a extend it out from the bed to add a bathroom and kitchen.
Here is a pic of the interior

It had 2 bunks on either side of the isle and a kingsize bed over the cab. Kitchen had a stove, oven and sink. Bath had a fold up toilet and a shower.

*waggwagg* This things is ultra cool! I love old oddities like this! It is really cool that this thing is still on the road and I am super glad it is being well taken care of. I hope she can get it inside though... What was it like inside? I'd love to see some internal shots of it!
I am going to go with a pull behind tear drop camper in the future. I'll build it and I am super looking forward to getting started.

Well they would have to lift the entire condo complex for the to happen... So I doubt the VW will ever see the inside of that parking garage. But it really doesn't matter, because they couldn't do the rehabilitation inside the condo garage anyway *Stupid HOA and their rules*.
Ow.. really... now building a teardrop sounds like fun. I wanted to buy a small 8 foot cargo trailer and convert it to a camper but the missus wanted more amenities then she thought I could install so we wound up buying a toy hauler.
*ref this post regarding the toy hauler* http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/2291093/
So do you plan on making the teardrop so you can tow it with your motorcycle?
*huggs*

*wigglewaggs* Naw, it will be to big for a bike however I could make a smaller one. I would build something like this: http://exit78.com/big-woody/ Mine would fit a queez size bed in the sleeping compartment and have storage and kitchen stuff in the back hatch. The queen size bed is a must for comfy zzz. Think of all the foxies I can fit in there with me!! murrr!
Awww thats awesome! I've seen a few of these over the years, never one in real life though. They also made one with the Bus front end, but that was never officially imported into the states. It was called the Jurgens Autovilla.
