"Hey there buddy. How tough do you think you are?"
I eyed the stranger suspiciously. He was wearing a black overcoat and sunglasses. Was he asking me how strong of a Pokemon trainer I was? Did he want a Pokemon battle? I have never even owned a Pokemon in my life. I know most people like the battles, but honestly, I was never interested in them.
"Sorry, but I don't really have any Pokemon," I said. "Besides, I'm heading home right now to-"
"No Pokemon? No problem! You don't need to have Pokemon in this fight club."
Really? Was this person serious? How are you supposed to battle without Pokemon?
"The fight club uses high tech equipment to simulate Pokemon battles," he continued "so trainers don't need to own Pokemon to participate."
"Oh. Really?" On one hand, it was getting late, and I really needed to get home. On the other hand, I was interested in what new technology this person was talking about.
"This is a once in a lifetime chance, buddy, don't let it slip by."
"Well, alright, I'll bite. Show me this new technology."
"Great. My name is Bruce, and you are?"
"Milo"
"Well, Buddy, you won't regret this. I guarantee you this will change your life!!"
~~~~~~~~~~
"So how strong do you reckon you are, Hon?"
"Who me? I could beat anybody in a Pokemon battle! That is, as soon as I get a Pokemon!"
She giggled and I blushed slightly. We had met an hour ago at a coffee shop and we really hit it off. Her name was Lisa, and she was apparently a Pokemon trainer looking for a powerful partner. Well, coincidentally, I was planning on getting a starter Pokemon in a few weeks. Then I'll be the most powerful partner ever! I could see it now! Lisa and Jack! The powerful Trainer Duo!
"Well," she said, bringing me back to reality, "I heard there's a fight club nearby where you don't need Pokemon. Their technology lets you simulate Pokemon fights without pokemon."
"Well," she said, bringing me back to reality, "I heard there's a fight club nearby where you don't need Pokemon. Their technology lets you simulate Pokemon fights without Pokemon."
"Wow! Really?" This was the first time I heard about this fight club, but I was definitely interested in it.
"It's not that far from here," she said.
"Well what are we waiting for? Let's go!"
~~~~~~~~~~
"We're here, buddy"
"Stop calling me Buddy."
The building loomed ahead of us. For a supposedly technological place, it looked a bit run down. The windows were boarded up and the metal gate was rusted. I started to wonder if this was a setup or I was going to get mugged or something.
"Come on, follow me." Bruce disappeared through the door.
Well, I came all this way, might as well see it through to the end. What's the worse that could happen? As I mentally facepalmed at that last question, I slipped through the gate and headed inside.
~~~~~~~~~~
"Look, Hon, We're here."
I blushed a little. I could get used to her calling me that. Although, she has not once called me Jack, so I'm wondering if she actually forgot my real name and is too shy to ask again. Staring at the building, I couldn't help but notice it looked a little on the old side. I brushed it aside. They probably allocated the budget to the technology inside. Never judge a book by it's cover, as they say. Turning to Lisa, I smiled.
"Shall we?"
"Lead the way!"
~~~~~~~~~~
Oh wow! This really is high tech stuff!
As soon as we had entered the building, my doubts were immediately dispelled. There was machinery almost everywhere we looked. Some rooms looked like computer labs, which were probably used to run simulations. Others looked like chemistry labs. That was probably used to make special alloys or something. We walked through a hallway for a bit, then we stopped in front of a door with a screen.
"Oh there's something I forgot to mention," Bruce said.
"What's that?" I asked.
"This facility lets you choose if you want to battle as a trainer, or as a Pokemon."
"I thought the Pokemon were simulations?"
"Well, yeah. It simulates what it's like to be a Pokemon, but it needs someone to do the simulation on."
My sus senses were tingling. "You know, this information would have been useful earlier when you were giving me your sales pitch."
"Sorry, buddy. It slipped my mind. Don't worry though. It will feel natural in no time." He started to key in the information on a screen.
"Hold on! I should get a choice here too! I would like to be the trainer if that's not a problem! Also, my name is Milo, not Buddy!"
Bruce took his hands off the screen. "Look, buddy, you said it yourself. You're not a trainer. You probably don't have as much experience as I do in battling. At least if you're the Pokemon, I can manage the battle strategy.
I groaned. As much as I hated to admit it, he had a point. I eyed the monitor.
"Will there be any lasting effects?"
"Don't worry. once it's over, It will all feel normal again!"
"Alright then. Let's get it over with."
"Nice." He finished keying in the information and stepped through the door. I took a glance at the panel as I followed him.
Name: Bruce
Role: Trainer
Name: Buddy
Role: Pokemon (Buizel)
For the last time, my name is Milo, not Buddy...
~~~~~~~~~~
"This place looks a lot more high tech on the inside than on the outside!" I exclaimed.
"Yeah. It is isn't it?" Lisa answered. There's a lot of complicated stuff int he rooms we pass. I don't know what exactly they do, but they probably help this place be awesome. Lisa stopped at a door with a panel next to it.
"There's something special about this place actually," she said. "It lets you experience what it's like to be a Pokemon."
"What, so I'll be like your personal guard dog or something?"
"Well, if you want..."
"alright then! but you owe me a date afterwards!"
"Deal!" She laughed and keyed in the information.
Name: Lisa
Role: Trainer
Name: Hon
Role: Pokemon (Boltund)
"Hey shouldn't we use my real name? It's Jack..."
She shook her head. "Nah it's not important. Come on! Let's go!"
I followed. behind her, excited for what lay in store ahead.
~~~~~~~~~~
Bruce and I split up as soon as we passed through the door. Some staff lead me to the changing room. I looked at the stuff we were supposed to wear. It looks like the only thing I need is a collar with a small screen attached to it. That's probably for motion tracking or something. I picked it up and looked at the screen. It only had one word on it.
Buddy.
I sighed as I put the collar on. I guess this is my life now. Well, Milo, maybe it's time to change your name to Buddy if that's what he's going to call you.
~~~~~~~~~~
A collar? Well, a good guard dog needs a collar I guess! If I'm going to be her personal guard dog, might as well go all out! Strange that they would have an entire fitting room if all we needed was a collar. As I looked closer, I saw it had a name on the screen.
Hon.
I've only known this girl for two hours and she already has a pet name for me. It wouldn't hurt to call me by my real name though. Come on. Jack's a great name!
I also noticed a sign with some guidelines on it.
1) The simulation takes a while to load, so there will be a gradual change to pokemon-ness
2) If you feel any side effects from the technology, do not worry, it will stop after a bit.
3) Have fun!
I was definitely going to have fun.
~~~~~~~~~~
FOR OUR NEXT MATCH, WE HAVE BRUCE VS LISA!
The computerized voice boomed from somewhere above the field. After exiting the changing room, I found myself in the fight ring. It was a relatively small arena, and there was nowhere for an audience to sit. I wouldn't want anyone to see me like this anyway. There were some screens near the ceiling with my HP bar and status effect. A screen at the opposite end showed my opponent's HP And status effects. They really thought of everything. I saw Bruce come out of a door, and headed towards him.
"Hey, Buddy. You ready to go?"
"So how is this going to work? Is it like VR or something?"
"Well, something like that. They project holograms around that collar of yours to give the illusion of being a Pokemon. It is done gradually though, since it needs time to warm up."
I turned to face the challengers. There was a man and a woman on the other side of the ring. I could tell from the collar that the man was my opponent. I'm still not 100 percent sure what we're supposed to be doing, but I guess I'll learn as I go...
~~~~~~~~~~
My opponent is looking at me. He looks a little confused. I guess I'll go easy on him. I make eye contact and wave. He waves back nervously. The announcer in the ceiling starts talking again.
ARE BOTH SIDES READY TO FIGHT?
"Yes!" We all say, some more confidently than others.
THEN BEGIN!
~~~~~~~~~~
I don't know why but I felt a shock go through the collar just now. Oh but I got more things to worry about. The fight has begun, and I have no Idea what to do. I turn to Bruce for help.
"Buddy! Use quick attack!"
Quick attack? That's just ramming the opponent, right? I could do that. I turn to the opponent, who seemed to be having way too much fun pretending to be a pokemon. Ignoring the strange feeling of my- the collar, I rushed towards him, wanting to do something like a football tackle. But at the last second, instead of ramming him with my chest, I jumped forward and my head collided with his body.
BUDDY USED Quick attack!
I saw the opponent's HP Decrease slightly out of the corner of my eye. My head was throbbing but that was to be expected. My feet didn't feel to good either. I guess I tripped. Does this count as side effects? I closed my eyes until it stopped. I opened them and noticed I could now see the snout of a buizel in front of me. Looks like the simulation has begun.
~~~~~~~~~~
This guy means business! I thought he was going to kick me or something when he rushed towards me, but he just straight up tackled me! Thankfully, I was on all fours for fun, so I didn't lose my balance. Anyway, looks like the simulation has begun. The guy now has the head and feet of a buizel, which looks a bit weird. I wonder how Lisa's going to retaliate?
"Hon! Use Bite!"
She wants me to bite him? Isn't that a bit too far? Oh well, I can't say no to my trainer. I did say I'll go easy on him, so maybe just a small bite... I rush towards him planning to give him the least painful bite in existence. Wait was that a shock just now from my collar-
HON USED BITE!
I... Bit him? I bit him hard! His HP Went down a lot! My mouth feels tingly. Is this normal? I closed my eyes until the feelings subsided. I opened them to find a snout in my field of vision. Definitely a boltund snout. I...Jack can smell many things now. Wait... Is that normal...?
~~~~~~~~~~
He didn't have to bite my arm so hard. Now my arm feels wierd. Looks like it's sprouting orange fur? Wow this feels so real... Wait why is everything getting bigger?! This can't be part of the simulation!
"Buddy! Use Growl!"
My...Milo's name is Milo, Not buddy... Wait. Why is Milo thinking in third person now?
BUDDY USED GROWL! The opponent's attack fell!
Something's wrong. Milo can feel it...
~~~~~~~~~~
Jack's attack is lowered. Jack also feels something else lowering, but Jack can't tell what it is... What will Jack do? And why is Jack referring to himself in third person? Jack doesn't know. That makes Jack scared...
"Hon! Use tail whip!"
Tail whip? Jack doesn't even have a tail? Wait... What's that Jack feels? Like something furry is pushing out of Jack's back...? Jack... Back... Attack? Attack!
JACK USED TAIL WHIP!
Right. Jack always had a tail. Jack just... uhhh... forgot. Anyway, Jock lowered their defense! Great! More damage later!
~~~~~~~~~~
Okay what's going on here? M-Mily thinks this is not going well! Feels like something other than defense is lowering! Maybe trainer- I mean Bruce can stop this?
Middy turned to Bruce. "Buiruce! Something's not right! Buise! Call it quits!"
"Buddy! Use watergun!"
Muddy must resist... Must... Obey trainer!
BUDDY USED WATERGUN!
IT'S NOT VERY EFFECTIVE...
~~~~~~~~~~
Jock... Hock? Hock is having trouble moving while covered in these wet clothes! Try to squirm out of them! That doesn't work, so Hock just bites them off! Hock doesn't need them anyway. Hock has shiny yellow fur to keep warm. Hock turned towards trainer uh... Lisa.
"Bolt are we waiting bol? Let's bolttack back!"
Trainer nodded.
"Hon! Use Nuzzle!"
Hock charges up attack, Hock rushes foward. Opponent looks confused, so Hon catches him off guard! Nuzzle, nuzzle!
HON USED NUZZLEE
IT'S SUPER EFFECTIVE!
BUDDY IS PARALYZED HE MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO MOVE!
~~~~~~~~~~
It's the collar!
Muddy... B-buddy tries to remove the collar. It's hard because his own collar is in the way... Maybe Trainer can help?
NUZZLE!
Ack! B-buddy was attacked! Buddy needs to fight back! P-paralyzed... Can't think... Can't... move... in these clothes!
Rip, tear.
Much better. Clothes looked silly on Buddy anyway. Now to get rid of collar. Maybe trainer can help.
"Buddy, use aqua jet!"
Alright fine. But trainer better get this collar off Buddy afterwards. It's not Buddy's style. Buddy gets ready. Water forms around feet... Feel it on my orange fur. Jump foward. Buddy's tails propels fowards towards opponent. Catch him head on! Buddy never misses!
BUDDY USED AQUA JET!
IT'S NOT VERY EFFECTIVE...
Not very effective?! But Buddy is the strongest pokemon! R-right?!
~~~~~~~~~~
Hon can take a hit. Although Hon is now soaking wet again. Shake water off, and wait for trainer's instructions. Glad Hon got rid of the wierd cloth things earlier.
"Hon, use Spark!"
Spark is Hon's favourite move! It's always so shocking to the opponent! Charge attack, Feel the electricity course through my fur, Let's go!
HON USED SPARK!
IT'S SUPER EFFECTIVE!
THE OPPONENT FAINTED!
THE WINNERS ARE LISA AND HON!
We won! Hon won! Happy happy! Wag tail! Rush to trainer, lick face, happy! Trainer smiles and gives Hon pets! Happy day!
Looks like opponent has been returned to their pokeball. Hon's trainer takes out her own pokeball. Hon's pokeball!
"You did well, Hon. Now return."
Hon did! Oh boy oh boy Hon will get dates and pets when he gets home!
~~~~~~~~~~
Darkness surrounds Buddy... That's right. Buddy fainted...
Let trainer down...
Buddy lost...
But why does Buddy feel like he lost more than just the battle? What did Buddy lose?
Hmm...
His... Dignity? Yes. That must be it. That's why Buddy feels so bad. Buddy has never lost a fight before... probably. But Buddy will get stronger! For trainer!
"Alright. Your pokemon is all healed up! We hope to see you again!"
"Alright, Buddy. Come on out!"
Buddy is let out of the pokeball. Looks like we're in a park. Trainer leans over and pet's Buddy. Buddy slaps it away. He doesn't need pets, or pity. He needs to get stronger! Buddy gestures towards the battlefield in the distance. There were no trainers in sight, butthere were rocks and trees to practice on!
"Bui! Buibui!"
"Oh you want to get stronger?"
"Bui!"
"Well, alright then, I guess wec ould train a bit. Then we can go challenge some gyms, see what you're made of!"
Right! Buddy has to earn his pride back! Buddy will get stronger! As Buddy followed after trainer, Buddy knows he will be the strongest pokemon ever!
~~~~~~~~~~
"Alright, Hon, we're home."
Looks like Hon lives at a ranch. Of course! It's Hon's job to herd the wooloos after all! Trainer brings Hon into the kitchen. Is it dates time?
"Since you did so well earlier today, I'm going to give you a treat! I did say I owe you a date!"
Ooh! Dates! Hon's favourite! Om nom nom! Delicious dates!
Of course, Hon was amazed how well he did in that battle. Considering it was Hon's first battle. Battling is not in Hon's interest anyway. He's more content herding, honestly.
"Well, Hon. It's been a long day. What do you say we turn on for the night?"
Of course. Hon is tired after today. Trainer heads to bed. Hon sleeps at the foot of her bed. If anybody tries to break in, they will have to deal with the Hon Attack! After all, Hon is trainer's personal guard dog!
Hon did! Oh boy oh boy Hon will get dates and pets when he gets home!
~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~
"Alright, Hon, we're home."
Looks like Hon lives at a ranch. Of course! It's Hon's job to herd the wooloos after all! Trainer brings Hon into the kitchen. Is it dates time?
"Since you did so well earlier today, I'm going to give you a treat! I did say I owe you a date!"
Ooh! Dates! Hon's favourite! Om nom nom! Delicious dates!
Of course, Hon was amazed how well he did in that battle. Considering it was Hon's first battle. Battling is not in Hon's interest anyway. He's more content herding, honestly.
"Well, Hon. It's been a long day. What do you say we turn on for the night?"
Of course. Hon is tired after today. Trainer heads to bed. Hon sleeps at the foot of her bed. If anybody tries to break in, they will have to deal with the Hon Attack! After all, Hon is trainer's personal guard dog!
